Post by: Old Cruser on February 18, 2014, 08:23:26 PM

I have been given a special edition D.T and this was one of the stories in it.

"At 9 a.m. on 22nd December, 1961 a fire broke out in the North Transept and flames swept through the building threatening the spire. It took two hours to get the blaze under control and the cost of the damage came to £30,000."

I can just remember - didn't it ruin the organ, amongst other things?

I was 11 at the time and  remember standing on the edge of the churchyard watching all the proceedings.  I'm given to understand that the BBC got blamed for some electrical fault as they were filming a Songs of Praise episode at the time.  I don't know how true that is though.
