Post by: Old Cruser on February 22, 2014, 11:56:30 AM
Oh come on footie fans is any footballer worth this -
Rooney's contract is understood to be worth around £300,000 !!

The obvious answer is no but the point in this case is that Rooney had very little time left on his contract and could under the rules have walked out of Manchester in 18 months time and gone elsewhere. If they had to replace him it would have cost them £30-35 million up front plus a similar wage so in economic terms yes it's worth it to them.
Now someone is going to trot out the old argument that it's obscene that he should earn that much when a nurse only earns £20k a year etc. Trouble is that society puts a value on things and at the minute 75000 people aren't prepared to pay £50 every Saturday to watch a nurse, 10 million people aren't prepared to pay £50 a month to watch a nurse on tv and 1.4 million people won't pay £60 for a nurses outfit. (Down Alsatian down!!!)

I have no problem with people on large incomes. Footballers, pop artists. etc
I have a problem with people using loop holes in tax laws.
I pay my tax on my wage. If I earn more, I should expect to pay more tax.

I've never been in a situation where I get to decide where to register my company.
Or who to pay my tax through. My employer has always done it.

Agree with Fly re tax loop holes - but if Rooney can get that kind of income, good luck to him.

Don't forget footballers (not just Premiership) careers can be finished in their early 30's, so they have a relatively short time in which to earn the money to secure their future.
Chesterfields own Ritchie Humphreys is the PFA Chairman - see the work he is involved in here.
