The sculpture on the entrance into Chesterfield is now there.
I saw it last night for the first time. I don't think it is yet in it's final place is it?
It's not as tall as I expected it to be, it looked quite 'chunky'
Wasn't that impressed to be honest.
-
It's called Growth and it wasn't my choice out of the designs the Council commissioned - but I've seen it a few times over the last week and I like it.
But until it's finished and all is cleared up we'll have to wait and see.
-
Yes the money comes from an EU fund to be spent on art.
I've just read some utter tosh spouted by someone elsewhere, it was one persons view/voice.
Would a Lib Dem/Tory or joint council say 'NO', We don't want the statue, keep your money. We'll just keep cutting the grass.
Do the party they back have the same opinion. It looked like political spew to me, let's disagree cos !!
I don't think for 1 minute if the Libs or Tories were in council in Chezzy they would say no, we don't want the money.
As you once said about me Pete, "You love visiting places and taking photo's", yes I do. If there wasn't owt there to look at, I wouldn't go there.
Yes I detest the traffic chaos it's caused, it disrupts my job, costs me money. Just like the new cycle path will LOL
It might bring people to Chezzy to have a gander, it's happening. So get on with it.
Yes I'd sooner see my tax payments help people in this country first, not elsewhere in the EU, but other than voting, I'm not in a position to do it !!
Sorry if it looks like a rant, it is :-X
I've felt like sh** for the last 7 hours !!!!
-
All Towns/Cities want to have a 'feature' I would imagine to draw people in.
Would I go to Chesterfield to see a small chunky 'tree' - no!
I would agree that any money to be spare could have gone to better use sculpture is lovely to view but doesn't fill bellies or put clothes on peoples backs, I suppose it's kept someone in work for awhile though.
We visited the Angel of the North last year Huge Fantastic sight to look at, no comparison in the two.
However I will stand to be corrected as Pete says 'when it's completed' if I think differently.
I have also yet to see it in daylight so again may think differently about it then.
-
The Tree?, is that what it is?, not an art lover so I don,t understand it, but if someone gets paid for doing that, then I was in the wrong job!
-
Welcome to ChesterfieldOnline Pastiman,
It's a very debatable subject. I drove past it today in my taxi. for the first time,
I've had a week off work with the missus on holiday.
It's nowhere near as big and obnoxious as I thought it would be. So I'll keep my impressions of it to myself till it's finished.
;)
-
Looks like a Triffid to me! :))
-
Drove train past again today...........................still looks like a Triffid! :)) :))
-
Had a long look at it today - not for me.
I just hope the surroundings make it look more a display.
Does anyone know if the lights on top are solar?
-
Explained here

-
Drove past today - it's rusted already!!! >;
Seriously it's like that Shakespeare offering 'much ado about nothing', can't see it making people come to Chesterfield either. If it does, then do the two structures behind the old AND make people go to Queens park?
-
Have to agree with you there Alsatian. I looked at the brown colouring on it and didn't like it at all, looked cheap and nasty to me.
-
It's supposed to be that colour. Have you seen the Angel of the North? Like that and other Antony Gormley works. http://bit.ly/1vNxYcm (http://bit.ly/1vNxYcm)
-
Shouldn,t motorists be concentrating on the road, its mad enough as it is on that roundabout, without looking at a so called metal Tree !
-
Had another look this afternoon.
@ engine driver - have you any railway sleepers missing as the tree looks like old bent ones ::)
Yes Pete we went to visit the Angel of the North last year. It's very impressive.
Maybe the difference in sizes has something to do my dislike of the colour?
-

Quite right pastitman. I had a look whilst the lights were on red but had a longer look whilst out of the car when I parked up across the road
-
There is a picture of a more appropriate piece of artwork for the Horns Bridge roundabout, around on facebook but I won,t spoil my manners and post it.

Oh, can't say I have seen it?
-
It,s a large gentleman stood in the middle of the roundabout in a certain pose. the clue is in the name ... horns bridge?.... not for the young ones I think.

It won't offend anyone MD

I didn,t dare post it, in case it caused offence but I did say I thought it was more appropriate, much better than the rusty tree. I won,t ask who it could be based on !!!!!

So the sculpture cost £300,000. I'm presuming this was all costs included?
Meaning of course the work on the island/ transportation of the sculpture etc.
What's this about the refurbishment of the railway station gateway.
Not having been to the station for awhile I obviously haven't seen anything but also have obviously 'missed' the fact that there is to be £2000.000 spent on it.
Not wishing to deflect from the topic and maybe another topic is needed - what is going on down there?
The work is part of a £500,000 revamp which will see £300,000 spent on Hornsbridge and the remaining money on refurbishing the railway station gateway.
Award-winning artist Wolfgang Buttress, working with design company LDA, has created ‘Portal’ which draws on the rich history that has shaped Chesterfield.
The concept also ‘looks to the future’ through the portal and to a new chapter in Chesterfield’s development.
At this moment in time I reckon Chesterfield's future looks pretty dire, shops closing, DCC struggling for cash - --- :(
-
I think Chesterfield's future is looking good. There are always tales of doom and gloom around, too many opinionated mardarses moaning about everything under the sun. We've done very well compared with most towns during the recession. Also we have a higher than average occupancy rate for shops.
The arts projects are not funded by the council - and the cuts are a direct result of the current Conservative and LibDem coalition's cuts to the councils.
-
I reckon we have a lot more shops open than most towns. Also, I noted on another forum, somebody visited another local market only to find three stalls operating. I don't think we're doing too bad considering.
-
Agree with you there Mick.
Welcome to Chesterfield Online.:)
-
Markets seem to be in decline especially around this area, shopping habits have certainly changed. Chesterfield market was always very busy on Monday, Friday and Saturday but now there are plenty of vacant pitches. The busiest is the flea market on Thursdays, no spare stalls that day.

Welcome from me too ;)
-
Welcome to the forum Mick :).
I'm not that impressed with the shops we have TBH there are plenty of mobile phone shops ( or used to be ) and charity shops.
One decent shoe shop as I know of, clothes for me are Debenhams, M&S ( which can be so boring) or BHS. Boots the Chemist several pound shops etc. Oh Eyres for furniture ( at a price ) etc etc. If I want decent curtains at a reasonable price where do I go?
Looks like I'm one of the moaning opinionated mardarses ::) :P
The Market has for some reason been spread out and I have wondered if this is why there are some vacant stalls on the main Market thus giving it an air of 'decilne' Does the flea market spread out as well?
-
Hiya Mick, welcome (y)
As for the 'tree', been past several times now. The shiny metal insides of the 'leaves' are virtually unseen from ground level.
All you see is a rusty looking looking thing with shiny stamen poking out the top :-X
-
>> If I want decent curtains at a reasonable price where do I go?
Dunhelm? Asda Living? Poundstretcher? Plus there's a guy on the market.
>> Looks like I'm one of the moaning opinionated mardarses
Nah, your not in the same league as the moaning minnies I mean.
@Fly - You'll not like Nelsons statue in Trafalgar Square then...
-
@Pete, Nelson: Went to London as a child, never got to see it. I did see his memorial statue in Great Yarmouth last week.
Very impressive structure, so I probably would like the column, minus the pigeon muck
(http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t382/Barry_Fly/101_1235_zpsf9fceced.jpg) (http://s1057.photobucket.com/user/Barry_Fly/media/101_1235_zpsf9fceced.jpg.html)
I didn't say I didn't like the tree, I merely said some of it isn't that visible. I'll probably end up nipping onto the walkway and taking a couple of shots :)
-
Not a pop at you mate, I don't expect everyone to like it - just fed up with all the whinging about it. Live and let live I say.
My post was about Nelson's statue - its about 170 feet in the air, LOL
Who's on the column in Yarmouth? Britannia?
-
Yes mate, it's 5 metres shorter than Nelson's Column. There's a stairway inside to a viewing area just below Britannia.
Only 2 people allowed at a time, £3 each, but the notice/sign was from 2013. So we didn't get the chance, shame :(
Must admit, there's a lot of whinging about the tree as you say. Get over it people, it's there.
If the council didn't go with it, some other council would have.
The lane closures weren't needed, that's my main gripe.

Says you who calls it a friggin Triffid :))
It's a woman's prerogative to whinge :P
-
Have I said it's a waste of money ?
I'm not sure if I like the 'art' or not, and didn't say I did in my last post ;)
I think lots of people have different opinions on the sculpture, but we're not popping at each other ;)
I've got enough of that going on on Facebook.
Bolsover council have confirmed Morrisons have bought Sherwood Lodge/Green :)

You want me to go to poundstretcher for my curtains :-? ( goes into a faint )

Bit too pricey for you? :)) :)) :))

Take that as a no then
-
So how's the Tree looking now, have the surroundings enhanced it?
I drove past last night but the lights were on green so didn't get chance to look at it
-
Thought you females could multitask ::)
-
Thought you females could multitask ::)
:P
Ok then - I am so impressed by it I forgot to look at it!! :))
-
Bit busy to look too much at 5.00pm but managed a glimpse whilst lights were on red.
It definitely looks like a rusty tree which has been chopped in half and then the top half shoved back into the ground.
What's with the walls coming down from it?
Hubby tried to take a photo, haven't looked at it yet but if it's worth posting I will.
-
This is a quote from the DT website by Melanie Jackson, the artist behind the artwork.
“It is still a building site and it will be radically different in a few weeks. When it is finished I am confident it is going to be a success.
“There is an awful lot to come over the coming weeks and it is going to need a few months to settle.
“As with the Crooked Spire, it is a landmark for Chesterfield. This is a progressive place and it’s great that the council has got behind the project.”
As part of the design process, Melanie gathered information about the town’s heritage at Chesterfield library.
She said the sculpture, which has been funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Barratt Homes, represented the town’s industrial growth with the walls around the sculpture representing a cog.
She added: “I didn’t realise there was so much history in the area.
“The sculpture opens upwards to show the town’s growth and change. It grows out of the landscape and shows the roots of the town.
“The flower comes from the pomegranate tree, which also has a history in the town. The petals and walls will eventually become the same colour.
“We are going to put turf down for maximum impact and there will be trees and hedges too. It will all blend with the landscape.”
I suppose we'll have to wait and see what it's like when it's finished.
-
So the walls will be brown to represent 'roots'
Ok it will be interesting to see when it's completed, maybe it will be quite eye catching.
Chesterfield goes back to Roman times doesn't it and if I remember rightly Newbold was back then the township - not Chesterfield?

-
I'm just waiting for the right opportunity to take a shot of the 'tree' (y)
-
It can get a bit busy on that roundabout.
I viewed it from across the road a couple of weeks ago but was too low down to see it properly.
Now what we could do with is an train driver with a camera ;)
-
Park in TK-Maxx and walk over the footpath, time of day and cloud cover could make a diference to the shot though.
This was taken from there before the tree started to appear.

-
Looking good now the fence is down and the wall almost built
-
I Don't know how true this is, but the rusty color is here to stay.
apparently, the rust is Lacquered to preserve the color.
That is why, i am told, the Angel of the North is rusty colored.

The island today:

Looking better Pete

-
Wasn't that on Facebook?
-
It is now, I posted the 6 photo's I took of the 'tree' on FB after posting that one on here ;)
-
Went past it earlier on my way to The Range. Its quite a nice bit of 'art'.
-
Does anyone know if it's going to be illuminated?
-
Apparently yes JR, but I've not seen anything official and won't be in town at night even when it's finished :-(
-
I can't believe this comment I saw earlier on CF
The council was gifted taxpayers money. It is very much the councils responsibility to ensure that it is spent wisely. To even refer to taxpayers money as a "gift" just because the council didn't collect it themselves is pretty evident of the councils attitude toward spending.
The difference between this and an art gallery is that a portion will have gone to the artist. The remainder is what has been spent on simple construction of the artists vision. I.e. the art is taken out of the equation.
Though your response of "It's not the council's place to scrutinise the cost of something that is in effect a gift to the town."
Pretty much sums up what I guess was the attitude toward the cost of this project all along. Its not our money we're spending, so who cares about value for money. The fact it was still taxpayers money didn't even enter their heads.
Oh well its built now. Let's see how the next project goes, when it actually is council funds being spent.
I don't for one minute think any other party run council in Chesterfield would have said. nah, we don't want the money for a sculpture in town. Give it another town or country.

A tomato from our green house :))
Remind you of anything :)
