When Joplins was reopened as the Crown and Cushion my Dad mentioned the old Crown and Cushion reputation was far from glowing which was confirmed by others of his generation. As I understand it the pub was home to criminals and such like was told that a lorry driver murdered a bar maid who worked in the Cushion. Ture the new Crown and Cushion isn't like the old one but was it such a good idea to reuse the old name given its history? I can remember when Joplins was renamed for a time as 'Barrow Boy' which was good given its in the market place before it went back to Joplins.

Ha! Sorry ironsky, you've just touched on one of my biggest complaints - the renaming of old pubs.
I hate it when some old boozer gets renamed the Parrot and Cheese Grater, or Boozahs, or some other such name.
If the Royal Oak, or whatever, has been good enough for the pub since the 18th century, it's good enough for now.
To me that's like killing, or at best seriously injuring, our town's heritage.
*Puts soapbox away*

Must admit, renaming a pub doesn't alter it's history.
Folk will always refer to it as it's old name.

There's that one near Killamarsh called The Disappointed Bride
What was wrong with the Halfway Inn?
