Just saw this - fantastic picture.

Good picture Pete, I heard they were lighting it up this weekend
-
Nice photo shame about the eyesore in it.

Well, it's there now, ( unless the scrap lads come in the dead of night with their blow - torches) so I guess we should embrace it.
I think the lighting improves it. I still hope it doesn't cause any distraction to drivers on what can be a difficult roundabout at the best of times.

What would you have put on it?

Cracking photo :) (y)
My only gripe as such was the road closures when they started the work. They weren't needed.
-
What he said (y)
-
How long were the roads closed for?
-
Scuse my bad. Lane closures. Lasted a good couple or so weeks, annoying to say the least.
-
Shame though that it needs lighting effect to make it look good
-
The photo shows it off to good effect. Can only assume it's on a long exposure because the reality is nowhere near that bright.
-

I like it in the day when its not lit - I don't think it needs lighting to make it look good.
@Jon - I don't know who or how they got that shot - and I don't care - it's brilliant, and shows off the gateway to Chesterfield with style.

I'm hopeing just that some scrap thief's take a liking to that hint.

Nothing it will look great now but in years to come it wouldn't look so good who's paying for the maintenance for it and can they afford it?
-
So you are saying someone would drive down the bypass and be welcomed with... nothing? A grass roundabout? Impressive...
We need to stretch our wings a little, put some money into promoting our beautiful town.
-
Here's a Spanish attempt at roundabout art. This is at Puerto Portals, Majorca.
I think I prefer 'Growth' ;D

Agreed - much better than B&Q! LOL :)

The area where the roundabout is has a great view of the Crooked Spire as proven in that photo I think people who are driving in that area will look at the spire first not that eyesore. Another thing is people (hopefully) will be more concerned with there driving to look at that 'Growth' remember its a very busy road and a known accident spot. Wholeheartedly agree we should promote Chesterfield but there are other more effective ways to do this when people hear the name Chesterfield they associate the town with the Crooked Spire not some odd looking thing on a roundabout!
-
If Chesterfield get's remembered for some odd looking thing on a roundabout, job done (y)
Chesterfield gets remembered ;)
-
It may be an odd thing to you, but to others it's a beautiful thing.
It takes all tastes - please allow others to express theirs.
Live and let live! It's only fair.
-
I don't think we need 'anything' there plus it's distracting.
If I lived say for example in London, I wouldn't be thinking oh I really must go to Chesterfield to see the Tree.
-
If folks are not capable of driving round a roundabout with a sculpture on it without having an accident - that says more about our town than the sculpture ever will.
-
What it should do is make people park up somewhere safe, then return to the roundabout on foot if they want a photo of the sculpture. This may include paying for parking and visiting the town too.
I've visited places before just for a photo. Did it the other week in Ibiza. We saw this park from the bus on the way out of Ibiza town. So we went back a few days later for a look around, armed with my new camera LOL :D

Well we are stuck with it now so only can live and let live. My concern is with maintenance like anything else it will need a bit of TLC now and again plus the effects of fumes on the metal itself will take its toll on it if nothing is done maintenance wise in ten years time it will look worse for wear then what. All this cost money too has the council set aside a fund for the specialised repair work it will need?

I like the photo of the roundabout with the planting and flowers on it looks nice. That's the sort of thing I would have done at Hornsbridge with the spire as a back drop. But didn't Hornsbridge roundabout have a landscaped design with flowers on it at one time?
-
Horn's Bridge roundabout had grass and flowers on it after it's re-design.
I'd hardly call it landscaping ;)
-
Why did it have to be something on a roundabout.
For instance Liverpool has the Lamb bananas, Canaries - different kinds of dogs as does Vancouver - I know these are not sculptures but draw a lot of interest.
Why not sculptures ( trees for growth if we must ) of different sizes winding their way around parts of the town each one a little larger than the last one. It would encourage visitors to follow the pathway of trees and also maybe spend some money in the shops/cafes as they go.
Too late!

Spot on idea draw people into the town where they can spend money helping the towns economy. Also could catch the attention of business who could open a shop on the trail.

Roundabouts like Horns Bridge came under the care of the council's Countryside and Parks Department so the money for maintenance came from council tax payer. Now while the sculpture was paid for by private company and the EU I doubt it would include a fund for repairs which will cost more due to specialized repair work it will need. If the roundabout was landscaped the maintenance cost would be lower in the long term as the council do it themselves and not needing a third party to do it.
-
Anyone know why they are digging the roundabout up already?
-
I saw that yesterday Jon - but I'm afaid I dont know the answer. All I saw was a cuple of big vans with some sort of "poer" logo on them. I assume its an electricity thing.
-
Who cares, all the approach roads aren't a lane down LOL :))
-
Maybe it's the roots of the tree

Nice one eabbus ;)
-
I thought they might want to water it, it still looks like a dead aspidistra to me. :) To my eyes, it's out of proportion; too wide and too short so not very elegant. No matter how many times I drive past, I always think that.
As for maintenance, the Angel of the North seems to be surviving OK.

The advantage of being pre-rusted...
Nice to see you posting again Dave. :)
