Just had a nightmare trip home from my sons in Old Whittington. The gritters have not been out and Whittington Hill is like a skating rink.Everybody is taking it in turns to get down the hill leaving at least fifty yards between vehicles.
Finally had to dump the car at the bottom of our hill as it is already impassable.
Well done Derbyshire County Council(I suppose there will be some excuse )

Sounds bad umpire
Just heard slack hill's a bit chaotic

May be something to do with the government massively dropping the amount of money given to councils. These cuts Osborne has foisted on us have to be made somewhere.
-
Friend of mine just tried to get to Sheffield in a 4x4. Says the bypass was slow going and then people were too scared to go down meadow head.
-
My daughter says they are currently gritting Chatsworth Road.

Yes, it's probably buy a set of winter tyres. Saves them gritting, & gets you home. :)

Apparently DCC didn't believe the weather forecast!!
-
They will in the morning when it's all frozen.
Bring on the grit, Let it go, let it go ;-)
Sorry :P
-
We were on yellow alert yesterday for snow, so not sure how DCC cannot know there was a high possibility of this happening.
It's dreadful outside :-?
-
A bit of grit under 6" of snow isn't going to do a lot is it ?
Just looked on the BBC weather page. 0 degs all day tomorrow in Boza.
I'd best give Rylah Hill a miss tomorrow on my trip home (y)

Looks like Stage Coach Drivers and Passengers are maybe having a disrupted day !!
Our road is waiting to be cleared and some buses are using it instead of going round the estate - and then guess what, a silly person on a 4x4 mobility scooter is trundling up the middle of the road, if a bus/ other traffic comes along there is nowhere to go.
Some people just don't think do they!

I do hope Cllr Slack has been on the phone demanding that Kent St Eyre St and Hampton St be ploughed 👿

Worsererere is that in the dictionary then :))
Gritter trundled up the main street in our village - didn't drop any grit though!
Hoping it's not a skating rink tomorrow, I have to drive to Ringwood Hall to a Wedding!

There were a lot of people on facebook wanting someone to blame, they suddenly become experts on the subject. As far as I can see it changed rapidly from rain to snow therefore the usual practice of completing a 3 hour route in time for zero temperatures wouldn't work as there's no point salting in rain. Not back at work until 5th Jan but I understand contractor ploughs are working today.
About 7 gritters normally operate from Chesterfield on mostly main roads in CBC, NEDDC & BDC areas. Reduced workforce from what there one was so consequently fewer drivers though with the amount of snow that came in a couple of hours I don'rt think a lot could be done as the roads must have been gridlocked before routes were even completed.
-
Facebook is turning into a whingers paradise.
-
I was following the weather forecast via BBC and our post code.
They said heavy snow was coming in around 11pm following rain and continuing through the night.
In fact the snow came in much earlier and was still going strong at midnight.
Little wonder we had chaos.
-
Just taken my daughter to the Chesterfield Arms and I spied an X17 on Sheffield Road heading into town.Sheffield Road and Newbold Road are ok but most other roads in Newbold are a bit dicey.
I have got to take her home to Nottingham tomorrow so I am keeping my fingers crossed(spade and wellies are in the car just in case)
-
I know it's an old British Rail Joke but we do really suffer from the wrong type of snow. The light powdery stuff that countries get where it falls in serious sub zero temps is a lot easier to deal with, drive through etc than the wet stuff we get. Add to the fact that we work on the premise that we might get snow whereas they know they are getting it and it compounds the problem. Our real issue is politicians making stupid statements about dealing with the issue when it's blatantly obvious everytime it does that we cant

Mr Gert and I had to get out the old Jeep workhorse to go and rescue some friends and their disabled daughter. They'd had a nightmare journey on the way home from Berkshire, but only suffered with the snow once they got almost home. They got stuck on Inky back road, so luckily we didn't have far to go and get them. The worst was getting their daughter out of their car and into ours while skating around on the ice and snow. She was very distressed which made it more difficult but thankfully after a bit of good natured banter and cajoling we succeeded and got them home in 5 minutes. Phew!! We all needed a stiff drink after that. :)

I've just arrived back from Ringwood Hall. Main roads OK but the main road through our village isn't so good, all up hill back home for me. I was shitting bricks I can tell you!!
So pleased I didn't meet any other vehicles coming down the other way as doubt I would have been able to carry on
Where are the gritters????
Pleased we have a taxi booked to take us back for the evening do!!!

Crossed posts Gerty.
It's my worst nightmare - getting stuck with daughter in the car. Wheelchair's and people with walking problems do not fare well in this weather.
The only blessing I could think of as we have trundled to Ringwood Hall and back is that their is a lot of weight in the car with the w/ch and hoist.
Pleased I've done my stint at driving for today - just got to get her back home tomorrow as she's been with us since Christmas Eve.
-
Got to Nottingham and back without any trouble. We joined at J29 about 1pm and could not believe when we had to queue to get on at Sunday lunchtime-it was very busy and nearly all cars and just the same coming back about 4pm. and there were still plenty of idiots who do not believe that the 50mph average speed limit does not apply to them but I am sure within the next couple of weeks they will find out it does.

I can see why it would be your worst nightmare OC. I certainly wouldn't want to do it again in a hurry :(

Had a right tottering time getting daughter in/out taxi - for the evening do last night.
Today we have to try and get her back home!! Only 'down' our street but not looking forward to it.
Taxi took us Grassmoor, Temple Normanton and Inky Green way - I wouldn't have attempted it but he had snow tyres on and still felt like we hit Turbulance at times :-?
Roads terrible.
Where are the gritters?
-
The government have cut and cut at the council budget this is the end result no gritters or git on the roads car accident paradise. The roads are covered in black ice where I am,you really do need winter tyres in this weather.
Whilst I agree with the concept of winter tyres, for the unpredictable winters we have, its not going to be lawful to have them fitted until the EU wades in and says so. All at the expense of a local authorities lack of gritting despite boasting they have invested in a fleet of new gritters. So, go get your winter tyres. After all, you don't walk in the snow without your wellies or boots. So why drive on tyres with no grip on ice or snow? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elP_34ltdWI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elP_34ltdWI)
-
I always thought Winter Tyres had more grip but the main feature was the rubber itself, being more malleable at lower temperatures. Please correct me if im wrong.
Our road is still an ice rink and to be fair, id rather DCC gritted the main road so they were clear. Usually when we have snow, the majority of homeowners get a shovel and clear it. We all tend to do the road outside the houses or tops of the drive so at least we can park off the road where its safer.
I must say though, I cant believe that 3 days after the snow came, the roads are as bad as they are. I know its winter and the temperatures are low but there are still parts covered in snow and ice.
Ive had no end of comments correcting people about Sheffield roads. Lots of people moaning that SCC havent gritted certain roads but its actually Amey that do it! its also amusing when it snows, how many people complain about why they pay council tax if the roads dont get cleared. If only they had a brain.
-
The gritter went up our street yesterday and did put down a small amount of grit.
The paths both sides down to the bungalow where daughter lives also each bungalow were cleared by two locals which was very kind of them. They cleared it right to the dropped curb which meant although I was parked at an odd angle we could get daughter out onto the cleared path so she could go home in her powered chair ( she's been with us since Christmas Eve ).
Road down our street a bit better but the black ice is causing problems.
I hear there has been an accident on the Derby Road near our village, I'll bet there are many more around as well.
Keep safe everyone

The only time I ever see one of these feeding from the ground feeder is in cold snowy weather.
I have a pole feeder at the top of the garden for other garden birds who don't need to feed from the ground but the Starlings ( greedy gits ) are using both!
They did however seem apprehensive about this bird ( is it a Coal Tit? ) and waited until it moved out of the ground feeder before entering.
The bird then waited patiently until the starlings had finished before going back in for more food.

I've been told the bird is a pied wag tail???
-
Sure looks like a wagtail :)
-
Was it wagging it's tail?

I dont know if theres been a policy change, or whether it is a result of budget cuts but what seemed most noticable to me about the recent snow fall was not the side roads and estate cul de sacs (you expect those to be left) but that the major routes, and I'm talking roads like Newbold Road, Hasland Road, Derby Road, the road through Unstone and Dronfield etc took far longer than normal to clear.
Maybe as a result of less traffic given its the holiday period.
The other anusing thing for me is that weve had any number of customer order online deliveries and freely admit that theyve done it because they weren't prepared to risk driving on their roads but were obviously prepared for us to take the risk on their behalf!!
-
Can I book a taxi please, don't want to risk driving ::)
-
I don't see a problem with that.
If I was an average person with little confidence driving on snow/ice covered roads, I would ask a taxi driver. They are experienced, professional (well, most) drivers and are likely to have some experience of bad weather driving.
Plus, with the inexperienced drivers off the road, it would be safer for us all.
Off topic, but related, this week I've seen an alarming number of posh folks with high end 4 x 4s slowing down to 1 mile per hour just to turn a simple corner. ::)
-
The council has taken a verbal slap on the wrists in the D.T because of the state of the roads. I have watched the grit lorry go through our village and put nothing down - it is a bus route. I've wondered if it's lack of cash and so trying to conserve what stocks they have in grit in case we get a bad winter for snow
My daughter stayed with us from Christmas Eve and on Saturday after Christmas I spoke with a manager from the support agency and and offered to support my daughter in her own home when she returned on Monday( providing we could get her back there ) instead of putting the agency staff at risk in their cars. It's what I've done in the past. So easy for me to walk to daughters and keeps their staff safe.
This was agreed and then Tues/Wed the agency used staff who were on a bus route.
Why do people think that taxi/ van drivers etc are exempt from having accidents in bad weather.
-
There's always wingers and moaners every year when it snows.
Why cant folks show a little more understanding instead shooting off their mouths every year as though the council have large amounts of money to pay loads of workers and buy loads of snow clearing vehicles and have them parked up for 51 weeks of the year.
Folks are quick enough to complain when they put the council tax up.
Also what happens after the snow changes everything - its a major headache for any council to get it right - they don't have magical powers!
Snow reduces our ability to get around easily for about a week every year. Get over it.
-
Seen your post Pete. Agree.
Why do people think that taxi/ van drivers etc are exempt from having accidents in bad weather.
Summed up here.
They are experienced, professional (well, most) drivers and are likely to have some experience of bad weather driving.
There's also the point that some people don't want to risk being in an accident in their own car, and probably don't care if the taxi is in an accident. Claim time :-X
-
I wouldn't have minded so much this time had I not been getting email updates telling me that A roads were being gritted ( which they were ) but also B roads ( which they were not ) -
Prefer to be told the truth, if they haven't money or man power just say so !
-
Was it wagging it's tail?
Not that I particularly noticed Pete, put a short video clip on F/B don't know how to do it on here.
-
Give me a minute OC ;)
Here you go. Yes it is wagging it's tail LOL (y)
