Here we go again...
Chesterfield Council have announced that the town will have a new logo and I have heard it cost £13,000...
At a time when many are struggling to pay their bills, this appears to be a huge waste of money. I see nothing really wrong with the old logo. In more affluent times I may be persuaded that we need to update and better organise the town's branding, but to implement it at this point in time displays a serious lack of tact on the part of the council.
The really laughable part is that the council states that "The council’s branding was originally created 40 years ago and so was not designed with modern publishing needs in mind, particularly for websites or social media." Now just look at the new logo and the lack of clean, crisp lines in the "spire" bit - probably looks alright on the side of a van, but is that good enough for the web? I don't think so.
What do you think?
-
I prefer the old one!
The one you have shown does nothing for chesterfield IMO.
It's bland! Not sure why it is felt they need to change it?
-
I don't think the old one is 40 years old. Or put another way I wasn't 11 when I helped design it!!!
-
In A Word, CRAP.
Looks like 3 Railway Sleepers on a roller coaster.
Does not look modern at all !.
-
The main issue is getting things branded that people don't even realise belongs to CBC such an Winding Wheel, Pomegranate & museum. The comments that people made about could have spent money on gritting just reinforces the point.
-
I'm sorry Andy, but with all the parties getting geared up for an important election, I think doing this now helps the LibDems enormously.
What are they going to do for an encore? Put council tax up?
-
I like it, prefer the current one though
-
Surely if people don't know who runs the museum WW etc then the places need branding. That, however, doesn't mean that money has to be spent on a new logo to achieve it.
-
I've worked at two places who decided to rebrand. The Post Office changed itself to Consignia in the early 2000's. It cost a darn sight more than £13,000 and it lasted less than 2 years. I'm not able to mention the second place unfortunately.
I'm only mentioning it because in the end it's a classic case of 'Look, it's not broken, but lets fix it anyway!' What a stupid waste of money in these trying times.
>:(

I don't get why Destination Chesterfield and CBC aren't more in tune with each other.
The signage coming into Chesterfield should be the same branding as CBC IMHO.
Don't they use the same designers ?
Tongue in cheek :P
Does Burrows or other councilors have family members who own or work for the designers ?
-
Oh come on nicheuk, there's a hell of a lot of worse places to live.
Having a pop at bits of it is ok, surely you can't just write it off like that.
-
Chesterfield is building or modernising thing whereas if you look round the country things like leisure centres are being forced to close. Northern Gateway and Co-op were setbacks but there are a lot of positives (and one of the lowest council tax levels)

We have noticed the decline in Markets Stalls in the main Market square.
This would be improved if all the stall holders were moved back into the main square as they are now spread out in town, was there a reason for this?

I understand that the last time the market was altered, alternate rows of stalls were removed, a smelly burger bar was put in the middle, a few benches fixed and stalls were spread around the town to make it appear full and busy. If just filling the market square back up again will make any difference, is debatable. I did notice that in Worksop, the market square was rapidly dying but they have now built a cinema on the site and stalls are now all the way down the pedestrianised high street and certainly more than was on the old square and busy. ( Not suggesting a cinema is built on Chesterfield market square of course.)

I would agree with you in so much as filling the Market Square up would make a difference pastitman, but the overall appearance would surely be improved. As it is now it looks 'run down'

Lets restore what we have first but I'm forgetting Labour like spending money we simply don't have. :))
I have to agree with this point, Nicheuk.
-
Yes things are getting done but its things that don't need doing. Building a new Queens Park Leisure centre that's has no budget for running costs so it must run on thin air. Northern Gateway project has been a joke right from the start why spend money on project when we have already units that are empty ? Lets restore what we have first but I'm forgetting Labour like spending money we simply don't have. :))
Leisure centre and market hall were in a poor state of repair. Major capital projects are funded by long term borrowing. Availability of grant and partnership deals with council keeping control are of course a bonus.
Northern Gateway looked an exciting project. unfortunately on hold because it needs a major retailer as the centrepiece. whatever happens Saltergate multi-story needs a lot of work
-
We have been in the Market Hall. 3 units standing empty?
All the money which has been spent on one would expect it to be a thriving hub - but it's not

That's a sad fact OC. Prior to the refurb the Market Hall was buzzing with shoppers, but each time I've been in it's like a little ghost town. I have specific places I like to go in there such as The Watch Box for batteries etc. and one of the butchers down the slope, though I always enjoyed a browse round the other shops. 1001 Vac Spares could always be relied upon to provide that elusive vacuum belt that you couldn't get anywhere else. So suddenly all the great little outlets have diminished apart from a few, therefore shoppers are not only losing interest but trust as well. Just my humble opinion.
-
@ Gerty we also use one of the butchers in the Market Hall, have done for years.
We have a bulk delivery from them every so often.
After asking how things were since they moved back we were told that initially things were busier than before, but once things had settled down they find it quiet with generally just passing trade.
Big let down by the sounds of things.
@ nicheuk - it may be that you could get your potted meat from the Market Hall?
-
Fair response on the DT website by Councillor Burrows IMHO

I repeat theres no way on earth that the old logo is 40 years old!!!
-
Jon - they're politicians...
-
To do this using branding that is 40 years old would set them up for failure.
Sorry, didn't read it all word for word, but did see your earlier comment :-(
