I don't think this picture has been posted before. Apologies if it has. Quite a good one of the 'Dog Kennels' area of the town centre.
-
Brilliant! A new picture of the Dog Kennels - my current fave subject.
Thank you Poppy, you've made my day. :)
-
Superb find Poppy! Can I ask the source of the photo? :)
-
Can I ask 'where' the Dog Kennels were??
-
Pete will be able to give you that info with accuracy OC. He's doing a project on it. :)
-
Here ya go OC - basically the Dog Kennels was an old area of chesterfield that turned into a slum area by the end of 1800s. It was a series of long yards that ran from Low Pavements down to the River Hipper more or less where the coach station is now.
It was demolished in 1912 when Markham Road was built.

You are very welcome Pete. I saw it and thought of you. Gerty I will PM you.
Pete - they have a nice copy of an 1881 Chesterfield map for sale in the museum. I can scan you the Dog Kennels bit if you are interested.
I can put it on here too for OC.

Many thanks Poppy :)

Here ya go nicheuk - I cannot find a picture of the actual pub but this will give you an idea what the area was like.
On the photo you can see the pub sign.

As usual, great stuff Poppy :)
Nice work too Pete (y)

Good stuff, thanks Poppy and Pete.
The area was huge wasn't it.
I did browse through the brewery site last night as there are some pictures on there - but nothing of this pub, which is a shame.
-
I particularly like this photograph and have enlarged it to see why the windows in the property in the background are white?
Would it have been some kind of factory or work house?
