Title: WW1 Medal
Post by: Old Cruser on March 08, 2015, 04:24:22 PM
I have been given a WW1 medal and told it was my grandfathers, only the inscription on the back is the correct surname but wrong initial for the Christian name.

I have found out the medal is a 'Campaign Medal'
Also known as the 'Pip' or 'Mons Star'

The inscription on the back has
Regiment Number
Name
A.O.C. ( Army Ordnance Corps )

Any ideas of a site I can check out who this person might be without signing up for a monthly fee?
I know very little of my fathers side and wonder if he had a brother and the medal was his.

I do intend to pass the medal onto my brother, as feel this by right should be his.

Thanks nicheuk.
I managed to find out what the initial stood for by finding a site and putting in his service number.
The initial E stands for Eustice.
I haven't a clue who he was - certainly not my grandfather as he was George.

So I've been trying to look at grassmoor census as that is where my grandfather lived but not managed it yet.
Also trying to find my grandfather's birth registration so as to see what his parents name were - not managed that either.

It looks as if I'm going to have to pay a subscription to gain this info, which really pees me off as the sites start off by claiming to be FREE when in fact they are not!

So I'm plodding on  :(
