Title: West Bars Multi Storey to come down plus work on St Helena's School
Post by: Old Cruser on March 25, 2015, 11:58:27 AM

A disused car park in Chesterfield is to be demolished, it has been confirmed.
About time as well.
It's an eye sore
Any ideas what they might do with the land?

Taken from the DT.

The derelict multi-storey car park at West Bars, opposite KFC, will be knocked down.

The news was revealed this morning during a meeting at the Winding Wheel discussing future plans for the town.

It is not clear when the demolition will take place.

Don't know too much about this work on St Helena's school, but can vaguely remember reading about it 'somewhere' ages ago.
Anyone enlighten me more please?

The meeting also heard that work to transform the former St Helena School, on Sheffield Road, into the Chesterfield campus of the University of Derby will start in July.

It's about time. I dont ever remember that car park being used. Certainly not in the 10 or so years I ave been with partner.
Any idea when it was closed down?

Coincidentally we were talking about the carpark just the other day and wondering why it had been left so long. Is there a problem with its construction that makes demolition risky? Why is it unused anyway?

Basically because it got unfit for purpose. The concrete that was used to build it started to decay and it would have cost a lot of money to put right. It was also built to a specification in terms of space size etc that rendered it unsuitable for public use. I can't be accurate over its closing date but the owners offered it to the council when I was still working for the borough and that's 9 years ago
