Title: New 'Bee' sculpture unveiled in Chesterfield
Post by: Fly on May 01, 2015, 05:27:56 PM
I called at the Spire this morning to take a few shots of the new 'Bee'.

I was lucky enough to meet, and have a chat with the wooden sculptures artist Andrew Frost, and Peter Corke, sustainability officer at Chesterfield Borough Council. I asked what was to become of the sculpture when it was finally finished.
Peter explained that the sculpture was to stay in it's present location for the entire span of it's life.
The chance that it may get vandalised will hopefully not be the outcome. They both hope the people and visitors of Chesterfield will welcome and cherish the new addition to the grounds of the town's iconic Church.
So do I, it's a great little piece of work, I love it  :)

I didn't ask how much it had cost, but the borough council and various other organisations funded the sculpture.
People would still complain if it was done for a pittance mind  ::)
Andrew also removed the board under the Bee's proboscis whilst I was there. These may be some of the first photo's online without it in place  ;)

Like Peter and Andrew said, we can't wrap everything up in cotton wool. It's down to the people now.
I see where they are coming from I suppose  :-\

I don't think anyone has actually said the bee is anything to do with Chesterfield OC   :)

Like Pam, I can't see any bee/Chesterfield connection. I would have been different if it had been a giant Trebor Mint but a bee...?

I don't see why a sculpture needs to have a connection to where it is exhibited.

Exactly Fly - and this is one of the root problems with Chesterfield as we have been discussing in pastitmans thread.
It has sod all to do with Chesterfield's history and probably would have been better placed in the Queen's Park among the flowers. It may well be ( bee - ha ha ) in relation to the decline of Bees and I'm not criticising  the actually sculpture - just don't think it's relevant to anything in our town - maybe we are to have them in different poses around the town?

Like Pete, I don't see a problem with it having nothing to do with Chesterfield.
It might actually draw people into town to see it though  (y)

What - to look a a wood carving of a Bee - I doubt it.
Put it like this I certainly wouldn't travel to say - Birmingham to look at a Bee - would you?
There has to be more surely

I think that as it is wood it will have a limited life span - and I don't think wooden carvings have the same impact as stone, bronze etc.

And, as niche points out, the kids will be drawn to, ahem, "playing" with it... LOL

Forever hopeful, but not holding my breath sadly  ::)

Well the tree got blown down & they've done something constructive & artistic with it. Better than an old tree stump!
Whether it gets vandalised or not, it's an added attraction. Don't forget CCTV is directly pointed at the Church, so I wouldn't worry too much.

As  we  are  in  the  church  yard,  has  the  old  lampost  appeared  back  yet, if  not,  does  anyone  know  where  it  is  now? Seem  to  remember  it  was  damaged  and  removed  last  year? or  have  I  got  this  wrong.

Whoever commissioned it should bear some of the blame - what a stupid idea.

Minor damage - I've seen kids crawling all over it with parents taking pictures. It was bound to happen I suppose :(

Is all the mess around it supposed to be there.

Shame it's already damaged, even if I wasn't that impressed with it being there
