Caught this on my dash cam today and was wondering your opinions on if you think it was dangerous. The road where it came from is left hand turn only, no traffic is permitted to do what he did. Its quite regular that pedestrians cross when the lights are on green but thankfully it was fairly quiet. I have the footage, car reg and licence number which I wont post here but im tempted to send it to Sheffield Taxi Licencing. What do you think?
Im happy to post the video for a better opinion but it will take a while to upload.

Very difficult to give an opinion on a static image Simon.
If the drivers actions didn't cause you to brake, swerve etc, I'd leave it be. IMHO (y)
-
Ill trim and upload the video later on. Personally Id say it dangerous but thats my opinion. ;)
-
Its illegal but did not look to dangerous but like Fly says its just a photo so cant get a true picture off what happend been down the road a few times you used to be able to go straight across years back , cant understand why they made it a left turn only.

I see people do that at the top of Foljambe Rd outside the old footy club all the time.
Up Foljambe is no right turn onto Saltergate, so go through the junction and then do a right. Done it myself. Nothing illegal. As long as you are aware and careful.
Also see people drive into town past Eyres and turn left up Cavendish St. Doesn't say no left turn.
Edit: Left turn, not right !

Why should a taxi driver be reported for using his initiative and taking the shortest route? Top marks to him I say. Leave the chap alone and delete the video - this is why I hate dash cams, they turn their owners into self-appointed traffic police.

The shortest route is fine, if its legal. This isnt. It is clearly marked on the road he came from that its left turn only.

He turned left, ish ;)

Have a look on Google Street View, there's a black cab making exactly the same move.

Don't know why the forum didn't like your link Dave. I've sorted it now (y)
Can't see a problem with the manouvre myself Simon.

Simon I have to agree it's a 'different manoeuvre' Not one I would make.
I've looked on the link Dave has shared - how far back is the left turn only as I couldn't see anything?

There's not actually signs OC. The road just goes left.
There's also no signs saying 'No U-Turns' after the corner.
It's like coming up from the train station in town in the left lane. Go left, then do a u-turn outside Eyres if you can't cut across into the lane to continue round the donut in the first place.

So how come Simon says it's left turn only?
-
TBH its a tricky one. If the taxi is going in a certain direction and a fare wants to go a different way, I can imagine why the taxi driver did it. It would a different matter with more cars around and them all going faster.
-
What would the Highway Code tells us?

From the highway code

That sign is built into the traffic lights also before that there is a no through road straight on and showing left turn only
-
There's no signs round the corner saying 'no u-turn'. BUT, making a right turn there is a bit iffy, you're partly on a pedestrian crossing so the lights would have to be obeyed before even contemplating turning.
-
I'm taking it that the sign posted by Handy is a little lower down the street and referring to the part of the road where the taxi has made a turn right then left?
Drivers are expected to be alert and notice signs.
This driver won't be the first or last to do this - scimitar/eabbus don't even think about it :-?
-
No OC. The sign is before the turn. You don't get an option, you have to go left. The taxi did turn left as told by the signage.
The 'right turn/u-turn' is the debatable turn.

Yes I know that Fly, the driver turned right on the bend of the left turn - wasn't there a red bar on the right of the sign?
You know what - left - right - shake it all about - and all that jazz ;D
-
Another view closer to the lights Old Cruiser help understand road better
-
From that view the turn doesn't look so sharp Handy
-
ok so if you could go straight ahead, why would they put a pedestrian area with bollards in the way?
Personally I think it should only be used for emergency services, not taxis for a shortcut. If you see the amount of people there that cross when the lights are on green, i think you might agree that it was dangerous. To go the correct route only takes about 30 seconds more.
Plus there are 2 traffic lights showing a left arrow on a blue background. I cant see any arrows pointing straight on.
I still stand by my original post.
