Title: Old Manor School Central Buildings
Post by: Anon on December 14, 2011, 03:48:34 PM
The demolition is now well on the way.

Walking past there earlier today I grabbed a shot of the old bell - soon to be gone. I wonder how many kids over the years heard that ring - and shuddered...

The bell had gone this afternoon, about 4.00pm.
Wonder if they removed it, or just knocked it down ?

Judging by its colour, I'd say it was worth a bob or two.

I was thinking more on the lines of, has it been saved, to be displayed in the new building.
Or somewhere else in Chesterfield. As an Iconic part of Chesterfield.

I'll be honest. Means sod all to me. But history is history.

I don't really know much about the building but seems a shame to have to knock down a piece of history. Hope the bell was saved surely it must mean a lot to many... :)

The building wasn't deemed interesting enough to be given listed building status. it had several out-of-character modernisations.

I was one of the 5 back bench councillors who signed the call-in to instigate the scrutiny process that reduced the extension of the conservation area.It now finishes short of the college building and has therefore made it easier for the surgery to go ahead.

I suppose it would cost less to build from scratch than to refurb the place too?

If they've simply thrown it away, I'd say they'd dropped a clanger!!  ;D

I learned to swim there, bit better than Markham Baths on a cold day but not great. Used to go there with the school in the final year juniors as well.

How old was the guy? My Dad used to tell me about him when he was a schoolboy - and he (my Dad that is) was born in 1925!!

Hi Alex.
Welcome to Chesterfield Online  :)
I remember slagging a female teacher off to a fellow pupil when I first started senior school.
Turned out, she was his mother  :-X Oops  ;D
