I was plodding on nicely, then my sister phoned mum up out of the blue.
They land at silly time o'clock in the UK new years eve, and I've volunteered to pick them up.

Me later still I'm afraid, but Happy New Year anyway.
We are overrun with "rescue" mince pies - rescued, that is, from the endemic ignorance of the difference between "best before" and "use by". As soon as they are past "best before", the supermarket gives them to a charity which then tries to throw them out unless my wife rescues them and brings them home. As if that were not enough, we have been given some mince-pie-flavoured fudge!

I know what you mean, went to Morrisons yesterday and the amount of pigs in blankets reduced was unreal, only reduced by a few pence though and the first one I picked up said use by 26th Dec.
Unfortunately my wife is one of those who takes the best before warning literally, bread for example, a loaf says use by say 5th January that's it end of discussion as far as she is concerned one second after midnight on the morning of the 6th {if it wasn't for me} the bread would be binned.
Same with most other things in our larder, the day after and it would be binned.

I have been known to purchase food like this and freeze it - ::)

The day after what though?
If it says "use by" then it should be binned.
But if it says "best before" then as long as it looks o.k., feels o.k., and smells o.k. then it is o.k.

Use by............Best before........ it's all the same to me.
If people went back to using their LOCAL high street shops on a DAILY basis and used the items virtually the same day there would be little need for dates on packages!
