Title: Rip off laptop repairs !
Post by: Fly on February 25, 2012, 07:41:58 PM
My mates lappy died, so she passed it onto someone her son's friend knew.
He collected it and said he'd be in touch.
He got back in touch, and told her the hard drive was shot, and wanted £100 to replace it for her.
She said she couldn't afford it, but did have another hard drive, in another lappy with a broken screen she'd got.
So he called round and took the other hard drive.
He got back in touch again and said that hard drive was shot too, so it's still £100 to mend it.
Again she said she couldn't afford it, so can you just bring the lappy and stuff back.
He said he would, but there was a £60 charge for his time. No pay, no lappy return.
So it cost her £60 to get her still not working lappy back  :o

I took the lappy home with me the other night. Took the original hard drive out. Hooked it up to my external HD caddy,
formatted it, put it back in the lappy, re-loaded windows, job's a gudden. Just had to download a few drivers etc.

More good news, he left his recovery/diagnosis dvd in the drive, so here's a link to some downloads.

Kent might be interested in this. Lot's of stuff I'd never heard of.

I also told her, if he get's back in touch about his dvd, tell him he can have it back, for £60  ;D

So before you go paying for extortionate computer repairs, if I can help I will.  :)

Knew you'd like it. Just downloaded and burnt the latest version.  :)

Just tested the second HD my mate had, it will format and is recognised,
but fials if you try to write large files to it. So I guess it is shot  :(

sorry, this might be me being deliberately thick but how do you download and burn it to a disk?

Step1: The person giving away software, music, video etc.
Copy all the files you want, to a CD, or DVD. Size dependant.
720MB on a CD, or 4700MB(4.7GB)
Use software to create an ISO. file. This is a direct copy of the disk. Upload the ISO. file onto the internet.

Step2: Person wanting the ISO. disk image.
Download the ISO. file.
Use software to burn the disk image, (ISO. file) to a suitable disk, CD, DVD.

Simples.

Software is Nero, CybeyLink etc
Disk burning software is usually free. Or supplied with your computer.

Need more help, just ask  ;)

This should be a direct download. It's about 500mb, just needs unzipping.
