Well, the work has started....the top half of the square is fenced off, a few paving slabs lifted, the stalls have now probably been chopped up...heaven knows what it will be like with the new look....
I go there Monday mornings for the classic car show in the new square...but the future doesn't look good for that....We shall see.....
-
What exactly are they planning to do We were in town on Monday and what intension were
-
You know the old saying.."You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear"
Money down the drain. I sincerely hope that lot on the Chesterfield council don't have a say on the Clay Cross re development otherwise that will go the same way.
-
It is taking a while...but the bases are in place for the new umbrellas that will...should....shield the market traders from the weather...
I have a look every Monday, when I go to the Classic Car show with my silly car....
-
They were digging up when we last went.
You gave a Classic Car DOHH.
I wanted someone with one for the DDay I organised on June !
-
Called in town the other day, can't honestly say I'm seeing an improvement on the market place, slow going as well.
In the end all that time and money for a slightly tarted up equivalent of what they had before, don't forget when it's done they will still have to fill it.
-
Page 2 of this weeks D.T. on what a spiffing job they're doing tarting up the market place. "Over 90% of the original cobbles will be reused" apparently.
Who the hell wants to keep walking on cobbles...I don't for one.
Oh and by the way someone is planning to build a few new houses in the Goytside area, I hope they're building them on stilts because correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't it flood round that neck of the woods every Monday Wednesday and Saturdays?
-
Walked down near Dents this morning and had a quick look at the cars, my favourite was the "poor mans Rolls Royce" the Rover, those motors when they first came out were head turners {and they still are}.
-
I couldnt be there with my car yesterday....next Monday abw....
-
I've got a busy weekend but will try and get into Chesterfield next Monday. (y)
-
What's happening in the bottom market?
New stalls in the square?
Where are thd Monday morning cars parking up now?
-
Car show is at the top of the New Square....we will all squeeze in somehow! Not been there for a couple of weeks, as my car has been in for work before its MOT
-
We struggle on Mondays TBH but looking at the extra stalls just made me think where the cars would go.
We will get in one of these days.
-
Ive seen some photo's of the Market Place which has been done up - Has anyone seen it and what's it like? Some seem impressed and pleased by the results
-
Walked through the market place yesterday, they're still working on the bottom bit {opp Boots}
Not exactly awash with traders maybe six at best, whether that's because word hasn't got round about the opening or traders have given the town the old heave ho remains to be seen, I know what I'd put my money on.
-
I was hoping to get into town next week to have a look but looking at my diary it will be a struggle. I think they possibly need to cut the stall rental down to get traders back!
-
Noticed the other day that the old rock shop on Packers row {above Savers} has reopened as a tattoo parlour, that's what the town needs more tattoo parlours.
Also what is it with barber shops? there's literally one on every street corner in town, you can't move for them!

Rock shop? Didn't know about that

Yes rare rocks and mineral type stuff like blue john stone and stuff like that, I used to look in the window at some of the prices, no wonder they closed, besides I never saw a customer in there.
Also the shop opposite that used to be Greenwoods is obviously planning to re open. I don't know what it's going to open as they've put shutter up on the inside, who knows it may open as a gents outfitters {again}
My guess is another barbers!
-
Update it appears the new tattoo parlour on Packers row is the one from the corner of the market hall they've just moved premises. Also the shop opposite that used to be Greenwood's that's now a cash converter.
As for the market place I had a good look today and it's only half finished, been at it almost a year now, they could have laid tarmac in less than a week and saved the taxpayer a bundle.
-
In town yesterday parked in car park behind town hall, only 2 trips one to the bank and one to pick up a Watson & Brown pork pie then back to the car.
I was in town for less than half an hour and got to the pay machine with the £2:10p already in my hand, put it in and it wanted another 10p it's now £2:20p
Saw in this week's D.T. what a stunning success the market was, it looks like the pictures were taken of the small market (near dents) but none of the big market the other side,
Also something is finally being done with the old M&S site, naturally businesses outside Chesterfield are doing it up, why we still have a Chesterfield council is beyond me.
You know the old joke...How many people work in Chesterfield town hall..........about half of them.
-
Walked past the old M&S site on Burlington street this morning and was amazed to see the doors OPEN with the words "Bargain shop" crudely scribbled above the door.
Had a quick look as I passed and it just looks like someone has just tipped merchandise in there.
-
Oooooeeerrrr, are they not letting it out for flats ?
Chesterfield will be one huge housing estate eventually

Ahhh yes I know the one you mean now - I was thinking of something with Chesterfield Ghost town running through it!!
-
There's been talk in the D.T. about the pot hole situation.
The R.A.C. says Chesterfield is not solving the pot hole problem fast enough {or well enough} Chesterfield Council are hitting back saying they are doing a good job, I know which one I believe!!
Apparently Chesterfield now has the dearest parking charges in Derbyshire, even some of the counties well known tourist spots charge less {and in some cases parking is free}.

Chesterfield Council don't repair potholes? DCC does.
-
I stand corrected.
At the end of the day {whoever is responsible} you must agree the jobs not getting done, the years of neglect has finally caught up with them, and no amount of money they may throw at the problem now will fully restore our roads, pot hole filling is their ONLY answer.
-
I'm continually reporting potholes. Very few are repaired and when they are whatever it us theh put in doesn't stay in!
-
I stand corrected.
You're right in everything you say. Enough isn't being done.
Nice to see the entire bad section up from Smithy Pond towards Press Manor has been completely re-tarmaced.
Awaiting the section between Hillstown and Shirebrook to be done next. Fox Hill junction.
-
As bad as the roads are round here {and it's not in dispute} today we visited Matalan at Sutton in Ashfield, and as soon as you turn right to Huthwaite just past the Woodend pub the pot holes are like bomb craters, all the way into Sutton and it's been like that forever.
I personally can't see anything being done, I don't even see any pot hole repairs.

That stretch after BoleHill on the bends was awful.
I'm please that's been done it was dangerous

Walked down Packers row this morning and rounded onto Low Pavement. Me and the wife walked past the old Halifax towards Santander and the paving slabs are an utter disgrace..well more than that they are a deathtrap, they are really bad, however anyone hasn't slipped and broken something is beyond me {if it ends up being either me or the wife the council can get ready}
The bottom half of the market looks like work has ground to as halt, can't see any progress at all. As for the car park at the rear of the town hall loads of slabs are piled in there covering half the car park depriving the council of car parking fees, no wonder they keep putting the charges up.
