'Which' have found that the home care for elderly people is 'disgraceful'
I can vouch for that having got rid of two in a year (can't comment anymore on that)
We all at some point in our lives may need this whatever our ages at this current time.
Personally I think central government who are now sitting up and taking notice of this situation should make sure that all social services have an independant person to go into homes on a regular visit to check up that things are being done properly and our elderly and disabled population are being treated with patience and respect.
Does anyone else have views/experience on this?

I have elderly relatives that get home care four times a day and can say they are excellent. I cannot praise the actual care workers enough as regards patience and respect - and care workers are mostly on national minimum wage.
However I agree that this should be monitored as old and infirm folks are very vunerable.

yes the new agency is excellent but people are expected to 'stick a pin' in a list of agency names to choose who they want - unless they have word of mouth satisfaction from someone who uses a care agency that is.

Must say that Mum has excellent care in the residential home at Somersill.
Only beef I have with the systen is that it costs us over £1,900 a month (if I remember to change the standing order).

I agree with Pete. Mum had care 4 times a day until such time as she was hospitalised. The people who came were wonderful with her.
But now, I fear for my own old age. Will I be able to have the same level of care? There's a big thing going on at the minute with dementia (rightly so) but it's been too long coming. As we are all likely to live longer than our predecessors, old age and all that it brings should be closely monitored even more. It's no-one's fault that they grow old.

Hopefully by the time you are old enough to need care they will be more on top of things.
Sticking a pin in a list of care agency names is not a good way to choose and s/s are not allowed to recommend any. I know from experience that there are rubbish agencies out there who are getting away with less than adequate care in homes. I have found one out of three agencies who is satisfactory During this last twelve months I have got rid of two.
Derbyshire needs to do spot checks on all agencies and ask the users questions. some are too frightened to complain though and this is why agencies get away with it.
When hubbies mum was in a nursing home we just used to turn up ;) keeps them on their toes
