Whilst at work today, drove past the petrol station on A61 at Stretton. There were two cars and a mororbike queuing parked on the pavement waiting for access.
At least they werent causing traffic any problems I suppose, But I've not seen that before.

They may not go on strike ---- if I don't get petrol I'll just have to stay in or bus it it's the people who need it for work I feel sorry for.

Don't forget to buy an extra fourteen loafs of bread next/not this, weekend.
It's a bank holiday weekend.

Panic buying over Tanker driver strikes.
They haven't even decided on a date yet  :o

I called at Brobot today (because my tank was nearly empty), not wishing to join the big queues at Clay Cross Tesco and they said people had been panic buying for last couple of days

Its pointless striking anyway.  Lets say the strike date is 14th April.  What happens the few days beforehand?  Yeah, everyone fills up!  No matter what happens, the fuel companies always win.

Ripped off and not a fat lot we can do about it.

I see the government is now actively creating the panic situation by recommending we all stock up with petrol or lives could be lost! What an evil bunch of opportunists the Conservatives are!

"A minister claimed lives would be at risk if a threatened strike by fuel tanker drivers went ahead as the conciliation service Acas invited oil firms and union negotiators to talks aimed at averting the biggest disruption to supplies since 2000.

Francis Maude, the Cabinet Office minister, also suggested motorists should fill jerry cans with extra fuel before any strike occurred despite motoring organisations and fuel companies warning people not to panic-buy."

Stiil, I suppose this "warning" helps diverts folks' attention from the other news of the day - like the UK's fourth-quarter GDP fell faster than estimated - "Britain's economy was even weaker than expected at the end of last year, underlining the country's struggle to avoid another recession."

In other words, all Osborne and Cameron's efforts over the last two years are clearly not working despite the hundreds of thousands of folks that now do not have a job, etc etc.

I've seen governments come and go, but never seen such an ineffectual bunch of amateurs as this lot! All the pain for none of the gain.

Pete,

Best post I've yet read about the tanker strike but you forgot to mention the additional tax the government will earn as a result of the increase in fuel sales - and did you notice how pump prices crept up yesterday...?

I have to keep a full tank at the ready as my Dad is 92, disabled and lives on his own (with the help of carers) 200 miles away. When I called at Tesco, Chesterfield, just after 7.00 this morning, five pumps were coned off - not because the tanks were empty but because the lone cashier couldn't cope with the queues - sort out your staffing rota, Tesco!!

In less than two years of this coaltion we've had rioting, arson and looting in our major cities, 100,000s laid off, welfare services being slashed, youth clubs and libraries being closed and now this. What a state they've got us in to in such a short time and all in the name of Tory ideology - bunch of ****ers!

I wouldn't blame the people queueing for petrol if they were filling up in order to drive around and panic-buy first-class stamps.

Welcome from me too Dave  ;)

I've got a bit of dilema. I've been driving the taxi for the last 2 week, even at the weekends when I'm not working.
My car is parked at the office, the fuel light came on just before I parked it up.
Friday, I've got to leave the taxi at the office, and go home in my car.

Question: Will there be a petrol station in town friday teatime with fuel.
Or had I best take a fuel can with me tomorrow and try grab a gallon from the first place I pass?

Just for the record OC, my taxi is diesel, there's no school runs next week, so very little chance of work,
if there's no diesel, I just don't work and earn bod all next week:(

If the government are so concerned that the country will grind to a halt if theres no petrol they could always help the economy at the rest of the time by reducing the taxes and duties. Just saying.........

Topped the taxi up with diesel, and my can with petrol, in Nottingham this morning. No queue  :D
Got back to the office, and thought 'sod it'. Jumped into my car, went to Sainsbury's and filled it.
Had to queue for about 20 mins  :(

Apparently quite a few stations are running out now.

Chatsworth Road (going into town) was a car park this afternoon with cars queueing to get into Morrisons - I ended up going through Somersall to get to Hasland.

Loggins - Ashgate Road - had run out of unleaded, but Walton Motors had plenty and no queue to speak of.  ;D

Tesco in Notts was cheaper as I posted earlier.

Yep, thats right, in the queue at the petrol station.  Well thought out then!

It's the amount you're allowed to store that's the issue - Francis Maude said 'fill a jerrycan' which holds 20 litres, that's 15 more than you're supposed to keep in a can irrespective of what it's made from.

Last night on Question Time - 1st question was who is responsible for panic buying of petrol? - 1st answer, Francis Maude.

Typical smarmy politician sh*t stirring and causing mayhem across the country unnecessarily.

Now we read how a woman was messing about with petrol to give some to her daughter and got 40% burns.

They should sack him

Shame on you Francis Maude

The station on Derby Road (now a car wash) banged the prices up when we had the shortage in 2000. They went out of business not long after. People will buy in times of desperation but will not forgive being ripped off afterwards. That should be a lesson.

Even the Tory press is having second thoughts about this one..

From Charles Moore at the Telegraph:

"But now that I have heard the Conservatives’ private explanation, which is being handed down to constituency associations by MPs, I begin to feel angry.

The private message is as follows. “This is our Thatcher moment. In order to defeat the coming miners’ strike, she stockpiled coal. When the strike came, she weathered it, and the Labour Party, tarred by the strike, was humiliated. In order to defeat the coming fuel drivers’ strike, we want supplies of petrol stockpiled.

Then, if the strike comes, we will weather it, and Labour, in hock to the Unite union, will be blamed.”

What a bunch of tossers...  :o

So the tankers drivers postpone their strike for a few months until after the stockpiles of fuel have been used and if the Tory t*ss*rs try the same trick again they'll be exposed for what they are.

Alternatively, people who have stored cans of petrol and who don't use it for several months will discover how it 'goes off' after a while and gums up their engines. Then they can blame the Tory t*ss*ers who told them to stockpile it.

Hopefully both might come true  ;D

Aaargh not again....!! (No, not the song...) I went to Tesco this afternoon 'cos O/H's car needed refuelling. Stopped behind a car which was filling up and the driver paid at the pump. The car in front of him was also ready to leave and both drove away at the same time so I pulled up at the farthest pump. It wasn't until I was out of the car and another had pulled in behind I realised I was at pump No. 5 - the one where 'pay at the pump' is out of order. How did I know? I'd filled up our other car at that same pump a few days before.....

So yet again I had to queue unnecessarily... at least this time there were two cashiers on duty.

Smaller queues than normal at Clay X Tesco this teatime. Had diesel but unleaded getting low. Pay at the pump wasn't working and that expensive super unleaded was out of stock but that's only aimed at people who buy bottled water.

....or those who ride motorcycles with fibreglass tanks or drive older cars - ethanol in petrol can cause all sorts of problems with their fuel systems. Most super unleaded is ethanol-free.

Nasty stuff is ethanol, it's 'hygroscopic' - it absorbs moisture from the air so all that fuel stockpiled at home is going to cause problems when it's poured into petrol tanks after weeks or months in storage.

Whilst the stockpiling of fuel was triggered by government comments, and having sympathy for the woman who set herself on fire, for the family to totally blame them for her accident is going a bit far.

For someone who transfers petrol from a can to a glass container in the kitchen with the cooker on, it makes you wonder how she has managed to survive 46 years so far.

Is there another panic going on re- fuel. Tesco's were running low again, very busy and some pumps out of fuel. When I asked an assistant I was told they hadn't been having deliveries for some reason - but were hoping to get one tonight.
Not heard how the talks are going so off to listen to the news.
Title: Re: Busy at tesco's petrol pump

A few weeks ago, during the panic buying, I went in just after 8 one morning to find the row of pumps nearest the store coned off. As I got to the front of the queue to pay the cashier was on the phone to the store asking for more staff 'cos she couldn't cope and had coned off some pumps to slow things down.

I wish they'd fix the 'pay at the pump' on Pump 5; I always drive forward to free pumps and twice that one has caught me out...
