Chesterfield Discussion / Re: Where has Chesterfield gone?
« on: May 01, 2015, 07:26:31 AM »

, unfortunately the importance of our Towns history has been ignored in the name of 'modernization' where other places have built on this to attract visitors.
I know we can't compete with York - but that has been built up to extend the knowledge of York's history.

I would have loved to have seen the old Chesterfield Hotel made into  more of a tourist attraction with Stevenson and the history behind our railway station.
We have a lovely Park and I reckon more could be done with it than sticking a Fair ground or circus on once in awhile.

There is a list of possibilities if only someone would lend some time and thought into it!!

True  OC,  there  are  so  many  things  that  could  be  worked  on  but  who  would  that  someone  be?  Sadly,  I  have  come  to  the  conclusion  that  the  powers  that  be,  haven,t  the  ideas,  so  just  don,t  care.  Such  a  pity, such  a  waste.

This is what happens when you try to modernize a town and destroyed its heritage, look what's been lost and ask yourself has it been replaced by anything better?

True, nicheuk, in  my  opinion  nothing  has  been  replaced  that  is  better, can,t  at  this  moment   think  of  a  single  improvement. There  are  usually  ways  around  problems  if  bothered  to  look.  Fully  aware  that  we  have  to  move  with  the  times  but  so  much  has  been  lost,  only  photographs  remain  to  remind  us  of  what  was.  The  authorities  seem  to  have  no  understanding  of  preserving   the  towns  history.

Where  has  Chesterfield  gone?,  Most  of  the  south  of  town,  Horns  bridge  area,  south  town  centre / Vicar  lane,  Beetwell  Street,  lower  Saltergate  and  everything  that  the  bypass  needed, all  gone  and  replaced  with  what  can  be  seen  in  any  other  of  todays  towns.  Is  there  enough  made  of  what  remains,  we  have  a  unique  church, is  it  advertised  enough?,  a  varied  industrial  and  railway  history,  forgotten?  The  Shambles, not  as  it  should  be,  one  of  the  largest  open  air  markets,  slowly  fading  away,  a  canal  that  could  be  alive  again,  George  Stephensons  connection  with  the  area, could  more  be  made  of  it?,  etc,  etc.  Good  to  see   that  there  are  members  on  here   that  love  their  town  and  promote  it,  as  we  have  a  lot  to  be  proud  of  but  ........
When  speaking  to  outsiders,  they  say,  Oh!  Chesterfield?  is  that  the  place  with  the  bent  steeple?  Surely  we  could  do  better. We do  need  the  visitors, tourism, business  and  income, don,t  we?
Moan  over, back  to  my  cave. (got  some  more  election  rubbish  to  read))

Chesterfield Discussion / Re: What should happen to the Chesterfield Hotel
« on: February 03, 2015, 10:34:01 AM »
Now the hotel has closed, what would you suggest it could be used for? Or should it be demolished?

Could it be used for student accommodation, being close to the college?
Student  accommodation  or  even  part  of  the  college.  Can,t  see  it  being  viable  as  hotel  any  more,  the  only  guests  would  come  from  rail  travellers,  as  it  is  not  easy   to  get  to,  once  on  the  by-pass.
Just  don,t  mention  DEMOLITION,  council  like  that  word,  they  seem  to  approve  of  pulling  anything  down  that  is  part  of  Chesterfields  history.

We have noticed the decline in Markets Stalls in the main Market square.
This would be improved if all the stall holders were moved back into the main square as they are now spread out in town, was there a reason for this?

I  understand  that  the  last  time  the  market  was  altered,  alternate  rows  of  stalls  were  removed,  a  smelly  burger  bar  was  put  in  the  middle,  a  few  benches  fixed   and  stalls  were  spread  around  the  town  to  make  it  appear  full  and  busy. If  just  filling  the  market  square  back  up  again  will  make  any  difference,  is  debatable.  I  did  notice  that  in  Worksop,  the  market  square  was  rapidly  dying  but  they  have  now   built  a  cinema  on  the  site  and  stalls  are  now  all  the  way  down  the  pedestrianised  high  street  and  certainly  more  than  was  on  the  old  square  and  busy. ( Not  suggesting  a  cinema  is  built  on  Chesterfield  market  square  of  course.)

No  matter  what  the  make  or  model,  cars  will  eventually  become  classics,  don,t  know  about  some  modern  ones  though,  that  many  models  about,  they  all  look  alike.

Did  we  ever  think  that  the  cars  we  have  owned  in  the  past,  would  become  such  classics  and  worth  a  few  bob.

My  past  collection  includes ......

1960   Jaguar  S  series,  paid  £60  in  1970,  kept  it  3  months,  "too  thirsty".
1959   Austin  Healey  3000,  paid  £70  in  1970,  kept  it  6  months, "an  animal".

Please  don, t  ask  how  much  they  were  sold  for,  as  I  soon  start  to  cry.

General Discussion / Re: E cigs ?

What he said - but drivers can't usually spot it. We're busy at the pointy end!
If we spend our time watching CCTV, or looking in mirrors at passengers, whilst driving, its tantamount to using a mobile - driving without due care and attention.

No  way  do  I  blame  the  drivers,  they  have  enough  responsibility.

General Discussion / E cigs ?
« on: November 19, 2014, 04:55:50 PM »
A  few  times  recently, I  have  noticed  some  people  using  their  E cigs  (or  whatever  the   correct  term  is ) on   buses,  usually  curled  up  on  the  back  seat  thinking  no  one  can  see  them.  Can,t  see  the  smoker  but  the  cloud  of  smoke  is  clear  enough.  Anyone  know  what  the  policy  is  regarding  this  new  smoking  trend  in  confined spaces.

Buses  in  question  were,  Red  Arrow,   X17  (old  one)   and  No. 51
