You now have to take your Passport or Birth Certificate for a new/renewal licence.
Nothing to do with the Criminal Record Bureau, it's to prove you are British and have the right to work in the UK.
Apparently this is a Gov thing, not a Town Hall thing.

I've held a Chesterfield Taxi licence for the last 15 years, now when I renew it next Feb, I've got to prove myself.
I suppose it's a good thing really, proving you are eligible to work in the UK.

If your licence expires, you have to apply as a new driver.

Cost of badge, it all adds up to a lot of dosh.

So you nip into the town hall the day before your licence expires to renew it.
Then find out you need a passport or birth certificate, but you don't have or own either.
So you nip down to the registry office for your birth certificate.
£31 if you want it on the day 
£10 if you can wait 2 days 
You can't wait 2 days, your licence will expire 

1 bloke I know lost his licence because it ran out on SAT 30th June, the day he came back from his holiday abroad.
He went into the town hall MON 2nd July and they wouldn't budge. EXPIRED !!

Pity you didn't text this closer to the time. I'm pretty sure they can't do that. European law dictates that if something has a closing date on the weekend and the relevant body is closed they have to accept submission on the first available working day ie the Monday.
