Saltergate

In  the  fifties, I  lived  for  a  few  years  in  a  row  of  stone  cottages  on  Saltergate,  Just  below  the  council  highways  yard  and  about  opposite  the  Elder  Way  Co-op  food  store,  as  it  is  now.  I  have  never  found  any  photographs  of  the  row. I  have  seen  the  odd  picture  of  the  Alms  houses  that  was  a  little  further  down  but  none  further  up. If  anyone  could  post  a  photo  or  guide  me  in  the  right  direction,  I  would  be  very  grateful.  Why  was  I  never  into  photography?

Didn't know there was a council yard on there, what department?

Yes,  there  was  a  Chesterfield  Borough  Council,  Highways  and  Street  Lighting  Department  on  Saltergate,  just  opposite  the  Saltergate  methodist  chapel. Its  entrance  was  2  solid  metal  gates  and 1  side  gate  and  either  side  of  the  gates  were  office  buildings. For  interest,  the  church  winding  wheel,  now  in  the  museum,  was  stored  there  in  pieces  before  being  taken  away  for  renovation. The  yard  closed  and  was  demolished  for  the  multi-story  car  park  to  be  built.
