Speaker of the Commons John Bercow was left on the brink of tears this afternoon as a Tory plot to oust him was defeated in dramatic scenes.
William Hague, in his last act in Parliament before stepping down, tried to sneak through a change in the rules which would have made it easier for MPs to axe Mr Bercow after the election.
Labour’s Jamie Reed accused him of doing David Cameron’s dirty work.
Mr Reed said: “Doesn’t the Leader of the House deserve better than being forced to allow his political epitaph to be written by a lazy, cowardly, bullying, spiteful, vindictive Prime Minister who isn’t fit to lace his shoes?”Three cheers for Labour - three boos for Nasty William Hague and Nasty David Cameron
