Homeless in Chesterfield is their any help for them?
« on: May 13, 2016, 09:50:02 AM »
On my recent visits to town Iv noticed quite a few doorways with cardboard on the floor a trail tell sign of someone sleeping rough. Popular spots seem to be the old Coop and a ledge at Bank of Scotland and alleyways dotted around the town is their any kind of shelter for them in Chesterfield or places to get food. I know Fly works for a taxi company do you work at night time do you see many homeless people about ?

I've noticed the one on the Bank of Scotland.
There was no one sat on the blanket but did remark to hubby that I wondered if they place was reserved as there was another item at the side of the blanket?

A few of the people who sit outside RBS on the 'ledge' have flats/houses in the Chesterfield area.
It's surprising what I can get to know from my taxi customers.
Coincidence the ledge is near the cash machine ?

I bet RBS are happy about them hanging about near the cash machine a bit off putting. Not homeless but a oldish guy likes asking for money on Beetwell Street I call him the 20p man as that what he asks for seen him with a fag on can't be that short. Its a shame as the genuine homeless get tarred with the same brush.

There's plenty of 20p men. No prizes for guessing what's in their fags  ::)

I think I know who you mean. He tried so sell me 10 cigarettes for ?3. If you say no he asks to lend him money for a coffee. Whatever he's straight in the betting shop afterwards!

I know there is a regular near the cash machine at the RBS. In fairness he asks for "spare change"usually as you walk past him. I don't think they would be daft enough though to harass ATM users directly though. The Police would be on that straight away. CCTV covers that part of town as well. As for Beetwell St under the glass covered bus stands (beneath Tesco Extra) I have seen drunks squaring up to each other in the vicinity of OAP's, Mums & their children waiting for buses.Same area Police and Ambulance called. One day, I'm stood there waiting to take over a bus when it comes in, and there is a female (hair in dreadlocks wearing a parka) crawling on hands and knees, yet able to speak at the same time. She has a dog too - someone must have been looking after it for her on that occasion!
It bewilders me quite frankly. We are to an extent a tourist town, and many Coaches drop off at the Coach station on Beetwell St., to be met by folks out of their skulls on drink and/or drugs.
To be fair, since the weather has temporarily warmed up, I have not seen so many of the above incidents.
Still, it's a sad reflection of our world today :(

I wouldn't give spare change but maybe a drink or sandwich. However if they have a dog - they shouldn't need money as they obviously must be feeding the dog?

As for the girl on all fours, maybe she spends so much time with her dog she's acting like it silly woman.

We enjoy short breaks in York and unfortunately there are people sat in so many door ways it's off putting! I suppose it will be the same for visitors to our town.

Not to divert away from WCT's original post about is there local help for homeless . .
There's 'Pathways' in Chesterfield. They were based in the old Racecourse Public House on Stand Rd,
but are now based on Saltergate near the old football ground.
