Chesterfield stench
« on: September 12, 2019, 12:39:04 AM »
On returning to newbold from Calow on Wednesday afternoon as we passed nebold tesco garage and aproached nebold village i and my familys nostrills were assaulted by the most dreadfull stench, as we got nearer to our home in Dunston the smell became more concentrated, from what i have been told this stench was emanating from a field behind dunston where a farmer had been spraying pig slurry.
later the same afternoon i went shopping to both Asda and Iceland and not only could you smell it outside the stores, as Iceland has no aircon you could smell it all over the shop even at the bottom of the shop, i then had to go to littlemoor post office and the smell was foul.
I understand that farmers need to spray their fields but i am also sure that causing such a stench over such a large area must be in contravention of the clean air legislation, when you consider the distance from the point of spraying to Sheffield road  is about a mile and at this point the smell was extremelly strong just how far was its total coverage, so if anyone smelled this awfull stenh let us know your rough area which may help us to determine its total area.

Thinking about it, when I worked at CS2 Lawyers (off Dunston Rd) about 10 years ago, we often had to keep the windows closed in the height of summer as our office backed on to a farmers field and the stench from him spraying was terrible.

Perhaps its the same farmer/field?

We live up that way at Brookside and you quite often get the countryside aroma post muck spreading, i'm sort of used to it now after living there for a number of years and growing up on Somersall Lane towards the fields on Walton Back Lane where you got it as well. Throw in the fact i worked as a kid collecting eggs at a place on the way into Holymoorside on Walton Back Lane which was far worse than anything you get on the fields these days and it doesnt bother me at all.

In fact the only time it becomes an issue is if i take the dog up onto the fields that way and let him off the lead not realising we are about to go in a field thats been done and he has a good roll around in it and takes the smell home with him!!

Actually years ago we suffered the terrible smell of silage these days the farmer has sold the fields for housing and there is very little pong, I'm not sure if he even has his pigs these days.
