Chesterfield Waterside Development Gets Cash
« on: April 17, 2012, 04:10:06 PM »
Just read on the Chesterfield Post website that the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Board has said that it has approved £2.4m funding from its Growing Places Fund for the Chesterfield Waterside development.

Maybe we'll see some action now. :)

What's the 2.4m for ?

The council are (spending/using funding) more than that doing up the Market Hall, well, eventually.

Can't see it being much more than pocket money for someone. Developers, planners etc.

Apparently it's delivery is locked up. This from John Burrows:

"This allocation of £2.4m will help unlock delivery of the Chesterfield Waterside development through providing the necessary investment to complete the canal link and improve traffic access to the site."

Access only available currently via Tapton or the Donut.
Oh, nearly forgot, also access from Tesco roundabout through the old Tesco and DCC's site.
Suppose 2.4m could persuade DCC to re-allocate.

Hopefully it will unlock further funding but building or improving access roads (whcih is my take on it) is just a very tiny first step.

Early signs are looking good though..there seems to be more happening around Markham Vale and this may knock on to things in the town center too.

Yes, noticed there's quite a few new units being built.
Plenty more round town with 'To Let' signs though.

For a moment there I thought he might have been on about the abandoned bit between Staveley and the other side of the tunnel, but I guess he just means joining the cut up with the recently-built basins in the southern part of the site.

The Waterside development includes more than offices:
• A new canal basin
 • Landmark public spaces
 • An eco-park
 • A waterside residential neighbourhood of   around 1200 homes
 • Over 30,000 sq.m. business space
 • Shops, Bars, Cafes, galleries and hotels

How so, Fly? It's mostly a brownfield site crying out for redevelopment and the river there is pretty grim to say the least.

The old Robinson site is a mess as well.
Bottom of Derby Rd never got finished.
Big scruffy expance of land left empty.
Markham Vale not quite kicking in yet

etc etc

All true Fly but Riverside is a mixed use site and therefore I reckon has a much better chance of succeeding.

End of Derby Road was due to owners / developers going bust, think it's been sold on now
