Does anyone watch The Voice?
« on: April 23, 2012, 03:24:10 PM »
I think the boxing ring contest is beyond f*cked up - what ever happened to singing?

They may as well go the whole hog and have the contestants actually slug it out in the ring. Bloody disgrace.  >:(
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Not that I like disagreeing with you Pete,  :), but I've been quite enjoying it, well the singing anyway. The idea of getting them to "battle" each other has lead to some good singers getting kicked off, but I think the quality of some of the acts has been excellent, I enjoyed the Dakota / Stereophonics sing off last night and the one on Saturday with Jaz, but one of my favs is Max Miller.
And ITV think they can put up some dancing dog sh1t up gainst this.

Its a no-brainer for me.

And here is an example of a chap who shouldn't have gone off, the white bloke is brilliant, but up against Jaz, who many people are saying will win.

All of 'em pretty dire - do they not know what a melody is? Or do you get points for how long you can sing a song without actually singing the melody.

Don't get "ITV think they can put up some dancing dog sh1t " - wassat?

A couple of weeks back on Britains Got Talent, it seemed to be the big think and Cowell kept going on about this dog, but then it got upstaged by some bloke who couldn't find his keys or phone!!!!!!!!!!

Pete, you need to update your music tastes....I thought I was out of date ;)

Update my music tastes? I don't think so...

The problem is, Pete, you can't go and watch people who are dead.

No I didn't.

Are you suggesting that just because we have had some fantastic singers and songs in the past, there is no need to try and encourage more in future simply because we can always watch the old stuff from recordings. Much as I love whats gone before, I welcome new stuff as long as its good, and thats not something you can say generally about today's music charts.

The whole point of The Voice is to develop singers. That's why the "celebs" are actively referred to as coaches, not judges, and rather than be competitive between each other, the are actually quite complimentary. There is a lot of fresh young talent out there, but often isn't seen as it doesn't fit the mold designed by the "oh-so-safe" music execs. Adele being the exception of course, but again, that's the point of this show, its about the voice, not what someone looks like.

You should've done - he sang it acapella and it had the melody.

>> rather than be competitive

It was a boxing/singing match.

Very little talent actually comes out of these shows - and they certainly won't stand the test of time. You can go to hundreds of pubs and clubs and hear quality music from the "Golden Age" - but even in five years there won't be much chance of seeing this lot or hearing their songs.

I blame Mrs Thatcher, Adolph Hitler and especially Simon Bowel for crimes against the song.

>> The whole point of The Voice is to develop singers.

Not necessary if they can sing in the first place. More likely they want to stitch them up in contracts that make the "coaches" rich men.

>> There is a lot of fresh young talent out there,

Name me a few.

>> Estelle?

I doubt a singer of her calibre would be seen dead on such a show. But I could be wrong - I don't watch many such programs.

It's just formula TV, again.

IMHO of course

It was hardly a boxing match. People were coupled up to oppose each other....its a competition...what do you expect, how else would you find the best of the bunch...but they were singing as a duet to see who interpreted the song and put their own identity on it best.....so hardly pistols at dawn. Again, they delibaretly took some of the competitivness out of it by the couples being from the same tean rather than having singers against other teams going up against each other.

Normally I would agree with you, many of these shows just take useless nobodies and turn them into one hit wonders fro a quick buck. But if you've been watching the show, you'll see that a lot of the competitors are professionals. Backing singers, west end singers, ex pop stars, etc. Thats the difference, but for various reasons, they've not made it in the business. All they need is a lucky break and a bit more development.

Everyone needs a bit of help, especially young people just startig out. The music business is much more of a business now than it was 40 years ago and it takes more than a fancy tune to get success. And as for the coaches becoming rich, Tom Jones is hardly a poor man, but sure, everyones got a living to make. Certainly the approach from The Voice seems to be aiming for long term success rather than a quick buck. Hence focusing on the voice rather than pretty looks.

I just did in the posts above.

Normally I would agree, most of the public appearing on these shows are crap...I've only watched BGT twice and came to that conclusion... but I think this is more about developing professionals rather than trying to give easy publicty to someone who doesn't deserve it. Just like New Faces all those years ago.

IMHO of course
