The Olympic Games
« on: May 19, 2012, 06:04:22 PM »
Talking to my kids about this today and neither of them are interested. Not a huge sports fan myself, so I asked them if any of their friends were looking forward to the Olympics - they replied no.

What do you folks think - are you looking forward to the Olympics?
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

The one where I wrote:
"Didn't watch it, won't watch it and if (like this morning) anything to do with the Olympics  comes on I'll switch channels. It's a total waste of money at a time when the country is so f*cked up it'll be decades before it recovers."

Just seen the news clip where the Metropolitan Police unceremoniously decked someone who got to close.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-18128245

How much was spent on 'training' these officers, and that's before the games begin ?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18058190

Billions of pounds blown. Millions on security
But, loads of workers have had jobs for the past few years.

It's not for me, and like Our_Lass says, we've paid for all this, what do we get back ?
No one asked us if we wanted the Olympics here in 2012 did they ?

same will happen here after the games like it did in Beijing.  Some of the new builds will lie abandoned.

Not sure on the full details but apparently the only arena thats still used is the swimming pool, but not may people go cos its so expensive

And remember the World Student games?  Well we are still paying that off.

In a way I can understand why its a good thing, but mostly its a waste of money for very little benefit.

Im going to see the flame go past in Sheffield.  Im not particularly excited about it but its a once in a lifetime event.  At least I can say I saw it.

I hope it goes well during the Games, theres a lot of pressure on, be interesting to see if we can deliver (and get a few gold medals too)

One TV channel should be designated The Olympics Channel and provide 24/7 coverage and have all the Olympic advertising on it. Then those who want to watch it can do so and the rest of us can ignore it completely.

Not interested at all, but once it gets going, I will obviously want the Brits to do well. My kids aren't bothered either.

I see that the replica torches given to the runners are already being sold on Ebay but the best advert of all is this:
