Benefit of the Oly****s?
« on: July 25, 2012, 12:09:13 PM »
For those of you not aware you can for the next 8 weeks or so shop 24/7 in a supermarket that shall remain nameless thanks to the government relaxing the Sunday trading laws during the Oly****s and Paralympics.
Morrisons are opening 9-6 on a sunday.
We are remaining at 10-4. The only Sainsburys changing their hours are those in close proximity to the games sites and I think these are more for the benefits of residents who may find their normal life patterns disrupted by the increase in traffic etc.
Many fear this is the slippery slope to the Sunday trading laws disappearing altogether.

Just got back from Great Yarmouth where we called in at Asda on Sunday for some milk. We feared we would be too late as we got there at 4.05, but the big banners outside advertised that due to the Olympics, they were staying open until 6.00. So we were OK for our cornflakes the next morning.

The other end of the scale.... we also called at a Post Office for a stamp at 1.30 only to see that they were closed 1.00 - 2.00 for lunch. When is the post office going to realise that if they want to be profitable they have to start acting like a 21st century retailer, not one from the 1960s....we boought a stamp from the supermarket too.

Have you booked all those appointments in?
Only I've decided 7am tomorrow doesn't suit me how does 10 sound?
oh and Sunday 3.45 would be better and I'll leave the one for Christmas Eve  but its possible I might not turn up or equally I could turn up with another 20 of my friends.
And Boxing Day I do expect you to offer me a full range of your services there and then not make me wait for them.
How are you doing?

If the clients are sizeable and worth opening the business for, either I'll have the office staffed, or Ill come in and meet them myself.
Ah so we can turn away the little old dear who only wants pint of milk and only open for the customers with £200 worth in their trolly? Nice one never thought of that.
Im not going to force any staff to work unsociable hours, nor would I expect them to do so
But you want me and my colleagues to be available 7am till 11 6 days a week and extra to the 10-4 on Sunday? You also presumably expect the restaraunt and cinema to do the same for you?

Who is it who talks of double standards?

Ah, the problem there is that this great organisation is still somewhat entrenched in the idea of being part of the Civil Service (which it used to be) and is mighty sloooooooooooow at delivering change!

When I was there all their computer systems were at least 5-6 years behind, the reason they used to tell us, was that all new systems needed rigorous testing for robustness! I left in 2002 and we were still using Windows 95!!  :o

They should have kept the 'Sunday rest day' it gave families quality time (well most) and people made sure they had what they needed for that day - if not they just popped to one of the neighbours and borrowed it!
