Save the Crispin Inn!
« on: December 14, 2012, 08:49:33 AM »
Without any community consultation, Tesco PLC have announced that they want to convert our local community pub, the Crispin Inn, on Ashgate Road into a mini-supermarket.

The vast majority of the community are against this, but that doesn't seem to bother Tesco, or the current owners of the building (Enterprise Inns).

We the signatories to this petition say "think twice - this is our local pub!".

Please sign.

The trouble is this - the reason they are/will be closed is due to a lack of trade, something you will see everywhere (eg Badger on Brockwell Lane, New Inn Tupton, plus a couple in Dronfield) and unless there is a lot of money chucked at them to make them more attractive to their target market, they will only stay open for a short while as they still fail to attract new (and more importantly REGULAR) customers.

Signing petitions is really like putting a sticking plaster on an open wound - they need to get to the root of the problem, which is:

1. Cheap booze sold in supermarkets

2. Takeaway meals are now mostly delivered

3. Low cost DVD rentals and/or online movies (eg Sky, Netflix, Lovefilm etc etc)

4. Smoking ban in pubs

Your choice is to:

1. Go out in the dark and cold/rainy nights to buy beer at premium prices and watch what the pub plays on the tv whilst eating a (microwaved) meal - and then having to stand outside for a fag

or

2. Stay at home in the warmth, open a can whilst eating a freshly delivered pizza and watching a dvd - oh, and you can also have a smoke in the comfort of your armchair.

Went to the Woodside last weekend for a meal and I was talking to the licensee, she has the same trouble as my daughter had at their pub.........management companies are reluctant to spend money on refurbs in order to attract customers. It's a catch 22 situation and I am at a loss to see what the answer is.

Apologies for the negative post   :(

Signed.   I am a "regular" at the Crispin and will be very sad to see it closed down and replaced by another shop.   :(

Signed.
For what good it will do.  Chesterfield council seems to either be a huge shareholder in Tesco, or somebody is clearly in their back pocket.  There is enough Tesco stores in Chesterfield already.

Just for once it's got absolutely nothing to do with the council.
The building is still open as a pub. That's classed as retail. A different branch of retail but retail none the less. So all T**** have to do is notify a change of use from A4 (drinking establishment) to A1 (shop) and there's not a single thing the council can do about it.
They could in theory put a whole lot of objections in the way when planning permission comes in for the alterations necessary to the building but chances are by that time the pub would be lost anyway so there would be little point.
As an aside I bet Loggins are less than chuffed about it.

My comments below aren't in any specific order  MD

Obviously the owners of the building have been made an offer that is greater than the revenue they receive by using the building as a public house. If you owned the building, what would you do. Business is business.

For every new shop Tesco open, they are employing people, thus creating jobs.

Are there too many Tesco's in Chesterfield. Who cares. 'You', don't have to shop there.

Will they force smaller/other shops to close. Maybe.

Will the town end up being Tescofield with no other shops. I hope not.
Microsoft and computers spring to mind.

Personally, I think there should be a cap on the amount of retail units one company can have in a town.
Therefore I'll sign the petition.

Realistically there's only one way to save the Crispin.
That's for everyone who has signed the petition to visit the pub at least twice a week and buy a drink (or 6)
Let's face it we are as bad.

So we take our annual piss meet up to a local pub?
Nope we take it to a national chain!!!

Signed, if only to correct comments blaming council. Depends what locals want really, at Derby Road they prefer a shop to a boarded up pub. Does the Crispin get used much?

Name a pub that does good cheap food, and drink, and I'll consider going to another venue for a xmas meet.
It costs me and Our_Lass £40 in taxi fares to come to town for a get together  ::)

I do see your point though  ;)

One year I suggested the Spread Eagle - that's a proper local pub isn't it?

TBH, I don't particularly like where normally go - no atmosphere.
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.
