Should we have a motorway speed of 80mph
« on: June 13, 2013, 02:00:28 PM »

Personally I feel that 70 mph is fast enough even then we hear of horrific accidents/ multiple pile ups on our motorway.
If this 'is' trialled and introduced should we then have to take another different type of test to go at this speed? Why they find a need to even consider this I don't know - just set out earlier for your journey!!

An increase in 10mph in motorway speed requires better observation and increased awareness which can't easily be taught or tested; some drivers are just as dangerous behind the wheel at 30mph than others are at 80 or more. It's not the speed that's dangerous, it's the driver - I've driven considerably faster (up to 140mph) on German autobahn without coming to grief.
UK Motorways are the safest roads in Britain i.e. they have the lowest KSI (killed or seriously injured) ratio of any road type despite carrying more vehicles per mile. If the trials change this the increase won't be introduced. If it is introduced, I'd expect it to be enforced more rigorously than the current 70mph limit.

I'd like to see the speed limit raised to 90mph - 70 is just a joke.
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

I don't think 80 is an excessive limit.

Pity I can't stay under 30 in town  :'(

I don't see the point of high speed, with the nutcases on the roads collisions at 80mph will send cars into total consertiners as if they are not already at times. Are they built to take this kind of impact? I don't know much about cars but believe Ford have won a safety award in the past for it's reinforced body. Who on a motorway would be able to gain any sort of control at that speed when they can't at 70mph.
Leave the higher speeds to the racing tracks

No OC, speeding as mentioned on another thread.
The office phoned me last Wednesday and told me they had some paperwork through about me caught on camera(Last Monday).
The office has passed my details to Ripley, now Ripley have sent me the notice.
Now here's the funny thing. I was adamant I wasn't speeding on Sheffield Rd that day.
I saw the camera van outside the St Helens Pub. I also saw another on Whitt Hill during the same fare. I wasn't speeding.

Now I've received the notice and read the full thing, apparently I was caught an hour earlier than when I'd seen the camera vans. So the question now is, where on Sheffield Rd did they get me doing 37mph on my way into town ??
I can more or less pinpoint my location all day that day. I have work sheets and logs.
The camera van must have been hidden from my sight by a bus or lorry outside the St Helens pub and they got me from behind. Ooer missus  8)

I've asked for the photo evidence. If it's the back of my taxi(yellow number plate), hands up. I can't argue if the location is Sheff Rd at 11.26 am
If it's the front of my taxi(white number plate), sorry, I wasn't there at that time.

How many people overtake you when doing 70mph?  Its quite regular.

People will see a limit at 80 and ignore it anyway.

Personally a trial run is a good idea but during peak hours it should remain 70 and between certain times at night, be raised to 80.

TBH and back on track, people who tailgate at what ever speed you are doing is my major gripe.
And aris holes that nip into your braking safety zone. Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule.
Jeez, the amount of fools I see every day on the M1  ::)

Unfortunately Fly, that's the type of dangerous driving that rarely gets noticed or enforced yet it's what most motorway drivers complain about. I don't have a problem with speed; it's inappropriate speed that is wrong and that can be as slow as 20mph depending on prevailing conditions. On the other hand, 100mph can be entirely appropriate, again depending on conditions.

Agree with Dave. However, I've had cars that didn't want to go at 20mph so I had to drop down a gear - not a good situation.
