road surfacing.
« on: June 21, 2013, 08:10:55 AM »
well our street was done a few weeks ago with that horrible stoney stuff. the thing is i hav now noticed that the majority of the new road surfacing is now breaking away leaving even more holes than there was before. I know that there isnt enough money to do anything with these days but come on there should be a bit more time and effort spent on keeping the roads in some kind of neat and safe order..
This coming from someone who doesnt even drive too  :-[

Well its the usual DCC "bodge it and scarper" brigade. Filling in pot holes with tarmac, levelling it off, but not sealing round the edges, so as soon as winter comes, and water seeps in to these "repairs", & freezes, you will be back to the original pot hole - probably even bigger.
Maybe if more car drivers claimed for damage to their vehicles by pot holes, DCC might do a proper job in the first place.

Can they afford to repair them properly?

Sheffield are resurfacing all roads over the next few years.  Seems though the main routes are being left for the time being.

I think I remember reading that a driver can only claim damages to vehicle if the pot holle has already been reported?

Surface dressing is cost effective way of prolonging the life of a large area of road. Sometimes it fails but generally it's worth the risk.

Don't the councils do regular checks. If they know about a pot hole, and you put a claim in before they repair it, they pay.

Inspections are monthly, quarterly or yearly depending on the road. They should also be filled in within a day if reported and over 40mm (though some people exaggerate size. Council only liable if inspections or behind or repairs not done in time.

I noticed that when I walked into town the other day, the next problem is that, of all the other roads they're currently 'resurfacing', how many of those will end up the same?
