Should Slack Hill speed limit be dropped to 40MPH?
« on: May 29, 2014, 01:07:19 PM »
In the D.T readers letters someone has posted their opinion of the speed by motorists on the Chesterfield to Matlock Road.
Known to many as the 'flying mile' there has been a number of accidents over the years.

The reader suggests a speed restriction of 40 MPH along the road and speed cameras.

I'm all for the speed cameras, if they are actually working and also the 40mph along the main drag - but to do 40 up the Slack Hill I don't agree with.
Many vehicles would struggle to get up that hill at that speed, we would have a line of traffic chugging away in first gear.
It's a steep hill and already had the top lopped off years ago so doubt if anything else could be done with the size of it.

Looking at other steep hills I frequently use  being Two Dales and the one opposite the Peak Village ( sorry don't know the name of the road ) I can't take 'a run' at those and they are a pain in the butt going up, however they won't be as busy as the Slack Hill.

Just wondering what others think on this issue?

They shouldn't lower the speed limit. IMHO
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

I think they should make the driving test harder - and have retests for folks when they hit 60.

What he said.

Apologies for getting on the soap box, but, everyone talks about 'dangerous' roads - there's no such thing, only dangerous drivers. Certain roads may present certain 'challenges' and require the application of differing driving techniques. Does anyone else remember Slack Hill before it was 'straightened'? I would call that a far more challenging stretch of road than it is now.

If everyone drove how they (should) have been taught there would be no traffic collisions. Is it a coincidence that the Emergency services no longer call them RTA(ccidents), now known as RTC(ollisions)? By definition an accident is something which cannot be avoided, any collision can be if everyone drove correctly and gave the roads there UNDIVIDED attention.

Reducing the speed limit will not suddenly reduce collisions, the majority of drivers already keep to the limit, how many of these collisions have excess speed been a causal factor? If they ignore current limits what will make them suddenly keep to the new ones?

Speed humps................. Big-uns, on the up hill side! That should sort it out,........... oh, and how about a mini-roundabout at the top with out of sync lights. The same as every where else.

OR........ folks could just learn to ruddy DRIVE >:(

I remember going up slack hill in dads metro....It had a very hard time just getting up castle Lane so you can imagine slack hill. We had Lorries passing us and everything. Embaressing to say the least.
