It's a legal document that is completely sexist. I didn't even realise until I had to dig out my marriage certificate last year. I saw that my father was listed but not my mother.
It is 2014 and mothers are ignored on marriage certificates. I think it's about time this changed. That's why I've started a petition on Change.org asking the Government to let us include mothers on marriage certificates. Sign it here.
Mothers' names are included alongside fathers' on marriage certificates in Scotland and Northern Ireland. But for the rest of the UK there is only a box asking for the name and occupation of the fathers of the bride and groom. Mothers don't appear.
For many people who are getting married, mothers are an important part of the day. Some people want to have a choice between listing their father or their mother. This may be a simple thing but it says a lot about equality in our society and the respect we give to mothers.
Since I started the petition over 39,000 people have signed and The Sunday Times reported that Equalities Minister Jenny Willott is planning to propose the change. But other reports say the Home Secretary may not agree. We need to convince the Home Office to implement the proposal.
I believe it will be easy to change. After all, I'm just asking them to add a space for women.

I've got a better idea, drop dad's name from it instead.
The days of asking the brides father for his daughters hand in marriage are long gone !!
