The Crown Hotel
« on: September 02, 2014, 07:07:34 AM »
I  was  brought  up  in  the  centre  of  Chesterfield  and  recall  many  buildings,  now  sadly  long  gone,  but  just  cannot  bring  to  mind  the  pub  on  Lordsmill  Street  ...  The  Crown  Hotel,  apparently   demolished  1968.  I  went  to  the  corn  mill  buildings  which  was  part  of  Chesterfield  college  in  the  early  sixties,  so  I  must  have  past  it  many  times  but  the  memory of  it  evades  me .  would  appreciate  any  info. please..... Also,  I  have  had  recent  debates  about  the  court  house  on   Beetwell  Street,  opposite  the  old  police  station,  backing  on  to  the  bowling  green,  anyone  remember  it?

I remember the old courthouse but don't remember the Crown although I did a paper round a few years before it was demolished. You'd think I'd remember the actual crown on the corner of the building...

Anyway here's a few pictures of that area.

I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Thanks  for  that  Pete, pictures  were  great.  Strange  how  a  lot  of  people   can,t  recall  The  Crown.  I  understand  the  bar  area  had  grills  down  with  just  enough  room  to  pass  drinks  through  and  was  this  area  known  as  the  jungle  or  something  like  it?

Yep - I've heard about the grills and that it was a bit rough in there.

Welcome to the forum pastitman.
Can't say I remember the Crown either but looking at the photo Pete has posted it looks an impressive building.

I heard at one point, Chesterfield had more pubs per head than anywhere else in the country.

The Crown pub closed around 1966 built of stone and brick with a tower that had a crown on top. It had quite few rooms inside from the plans Iv seen of this pub such a shame it got cleared away. Lordsmill Street also had the Black Bull closed about the same time as the Crown. The Old Feathers was further down the street a nice Tudor style building closed in April 2003 replaced by an eye watering ugly building.

@pastitman - Just reread this thread and you had asked the question, "was  this  area  known  as  the  jungle  or  something  like  it?"

I just realised what you meant, I think. The area to the west of the Crown was known as "The Dog Kennels" - it was dead rough in it's day. Is that what you meant?

The General room of the Crown was known as the ' jungle ' the bar had grills on it with a serving slot the pub had a bit of a reputation for fighting. My late Grandad went in it as well as the Black Bull and the Prince of Wales on Beetwell Street though I doubt anyone would have tackled my Grandad as at the time he was in the Royal Navy and was one of there best boxer's.
