Bus vs Lorry question
« on: September 02, 2014, 07:58:50 PM »
I was driving to work on Monday morning through Renishaw and on the road I was on, it goes a bit narrow but still enough to easily get by.   I was a couple of cars behind a bus and on the stretch of road there was an articulated lorry coming the other way.  Anyway, narrow road, bus, lorry, somethings going to happen.

Cue the bus and lorry clashing mirrors.  The casing of the lorry mirror flew off and landed in the road and the mirror of the bus was forced back, smashing the glass but it stayed in its frame (I know as when the driver pulled up at the traffic lights he adjusted it and it was clearly broken)

So my question is, should the bus driver have stopped, even just as a courtesy?  Even though there was no bodywork damage as such, its still a sort of accident?

I know the registration of the bus and the company but im not posting it here.

I would presume the bus company and lorry company would both like details of the incident.
I could also imagine the chaos both vehicles would have caused if they stopped to exchange details.

Perhaps email the bus company and ask them if they would like more details.
Sounds a bit 50/50 to me  :-X

I assume bus companies still use defect reports for each vehicle, and that the next driver of that bus would report it.

The bus company would then be able to fairly certainly to work out which driver was responsible.

Perhaps Scimitar or eabbus could confirm etc?

Why not the lorry driver stopping?

He did stop to recover his wing mirror casing.  The bus driver just carried on.

I (personally) would have stopped my bus -if possible, before the lorry hit me on the basis that if you are stationary you are not at fault. That's not always possible though - and I've had some scary moments.
I tend to assess the driver coming my way and react accordingly because although I might be driving up to 11 tons of weight, you will still have a corsa sized car flying towards you when its my right of way & I think he's not going to make that gap!
I've had no accidents at all since I started driving buses in 2005. I know plenty of drivers who have, and the vast majority of those were not the fault of the bus driver.
CCTV (if fitted) usually sorts it out.

As an ex-bus driver, I would have stopped, reason: My primary care is for the passengers safety.

Some pillock in a white van decided he wanted to turn right at the botton of Cavendish St today, out sidethe Bell ?????
So he dropped the van into reverse, straigh into Our_Lass who was behind him.
He got out and apologised, realising he was in the wrong.
Our_Lass asked him to pull round the corner in front of Poundstretcher so they could swap details.
Thankfully he didn't want her details, but gladly gave his.
This won't go no further, twas but a mere scratch.

Always stop after an incident and ask for details. Imagine the guy smashing the back of the van tonight, then phoning our boss and making out he was rear ended by Our_Lass. Her word. his word.

Watch your back people, they're out there !!  :-X

Absolutely right - but without throwing passengers off of seats.
