We already have an assembly for Derbyshire. It's called the county council. We also have an assembly for Chesterfield called the borough council. If the government want to devolve powers from Westminster that's fine by me but why create another layer of expensive bureaucracy to do it?

What the government want to do is to be able to cut funding by hundreds of millions of pounds and tell councils/assembly to sort it out from there.

I have no sympathy for the LibDems and very little for Labour - but essentially the Cons (and their accomplices) want someone else to take the decisions on what should be cut. IMHO it should be Cameron's and Osborne's air supply... ;)

I think its all 'smoke and mirrors ' to get peoples attention away from the fact that governments  economic policy has failed. The country itself is not big enough for this type of system unlike the United States where each state has its own congress/assembly. The only thing what might work is for each city to elect its own Mayor like London does Sheffield had a vote over this but rejected it. I think in Sheffield case people wanted to keep the Mayor as non political figure and for ceremonial duties.
