Are the so called 'Big Cats' merely urban myths and wishfully thinking? Over the years reported sightings from anything from Tigers to Pumas' reports range from the depths of southern England too the Highlands. Lets look at the facts first, during the 1960s it became fashionable for the well healed to own a big cat and many were smuggled into the country via the south coast mainly by boat. However the new owners soon realised that looking after a big cat was far from easy and many panicked so many of the owners released there cats into the wild. It was during the 1960s when first reports of sightings started to appear in the press and still alleged sighting continue to the present. Problems with this case are: could such cats which come from warmer environments survive our winters and breed remember its unlikely a big cat from the 1960s would still be a live now unless it had found a mate to breed with and had cubs, food not so much a problem with sheep and cows a ready source of food farmers have reported animals that looks like a big cat has killed them. Lets say for a moment such cats are roaming the countryside like all living things they die why has no cat remains been found? Has there ever been big cat sightings in Derbyshire over the years?
