No More Deaths from Fuel Poverty
« on: November 25, 2014, 01:48:12 PM »

10,000 people died from fuel poverty in the UK in 2013.

This Friday, when the death toll from last year is announced, Fuel Poverty Action will be taking action. They're targeting Energy UK, the lobbyists for the tax dodging, huge profit making, Big Six energy companies.
Pensioners will lead the march under the banner ‘No More Deaths from Fuel Poverty: Energy Rights Now!’

Why? Because this is the day that the Office of National Statistics will also be releasing the numbers of ‘Excess Winter Deaths’ in winter 2013/2014- and it’s estimated that at least 30% of these deaths caused by the impacts of living in a cold home.

Shockingly, in winter 2012/2013 there were more than 10,000 deaths in the UK from cold homes (with 31,100 Excess Winter Deaths recorded in total) whilst in the same year the Big Six energy companies- British Gas, E.On, EDF Energy, npower, Scottish Power and SSE- made £3.7billion in pure profit.

And our pensioners have to fight to stay warm in winter, whilst, no doubt, the leaders of the energy companies will be sunning themselves abroad...

I find it shocking in 21st Century Britain we have people dying in there homes from the cold granted the government gives pensioners a Winter Fuel Payment but its a drop in the ocean. Its not only pensioners who are sat in the cold either we have families, disabled, unemployed doing the same because they fear a bill they can not pay while at the same time the engery companies boast of huge profits its nothing short of blood money. Perhaps its time to rethink the idea of state ownership of power companies.

We give away more money to other countries than could be spent on ours apparently.

There is an amount ( fuel allowance ) paid to pensioners.
£100 each for a couple
£300.00 for the over 80's
There is also the warm homes discount scheme which people with disabilities can apply for this is only linked in with certain benefits, the amount if given is paid into the utility account is about £145.00.
People need to apply for this, it is not an automatic pay out.
Obviously because of the cost we pay to suppliers these amounts are not enough.
