House of Lords refused budget cut as it would mean cheaper Champagne

Pampered peers refused to cut their catering budget because they feared it would mean drinking cheap Champagne.

The House of Lords has bought more than 17,000 bottles of bubbly in the last four years at a cost of more than £260,000 - enough for the 788 peers to have five bottles each a year.

But a cost-saving plan to share food and drink costs with the House of Commons was binned because they feared it would mean quaffing less luxurious brands.

In these troubled times? Really?

Time to abolish the House of Lords.

To save me the hassle of a Freedom of Information request can you find out for me what the cost was of the Civic receptions you attended to celebrate Chesterfield FC's recent successes?

I'll see what I can find out. Bit of buffet laid on not a slap-up meal. Much reduced mayoral budget, even the Lexus has gone. I would rather we celebrate successes in the town rather than mayoral visit to the twinned towns.
