Honest Answers Please
« on: August 31, 2016, 10:10:26 AM »
I've done my weekly car journey this morning.
Was waiting to pull out of the large Whittington Roundabout when I realised traffic wasn't racing around it at the speed they normally do.

Then I noticed a Police car waiting to pull out lower down from  Old Whittington?

Ha!! I understood then!

Come on own up how many pay more attention to driving and speed when we have a Police car at the back of us or - like this morning waiting to pull out of a roundabout ???

A police car wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest on that roundabout. It's a 60mph speed limit.

Which is no doubt why busses, lorries - larger vehicles shall we say - all struggle on this roundabout.Yet you come off the hasland by-pass to a 30 mph speed limit and traffic lights too (no one slows down to 30mph unless they are doing their driving test).
I always find it quite interesting too when traffic lights fail - people seem to open up the box in their brains labelled "common sense" & drive with caution.
I still find todays driving standards somewhat shocking at times but I try to expect the unexpected and, generally , it works for me.
As for taxi drivers......... :P

I've always said, the speed limit on Whit roundabout wants dropping to 30mph. This would slow down the bypass traffic as it hits the island, making it easier for slow vehicles to pull out onto it safely.

It's a good job some buses are quite slow. Imagine some of the drivers in something faster   :o  O0

yes we know it's a 60 there but the very fact that drivers were driving slow amused me when I saw the Police car - would they have been whizzing round if it hadn't?

I know on Derby Road there's not many places to overtake safely these days - but in the past how many of us have passed a Police car going in the opposite well below the ( what was then )  60  - and a stream of traffic at the back -  :))
If that been an ordinary motorist would they have trundled along at the back?

With that thought in mind, why do some people approach the Horns Bridge roundabout from the Hasland by pass in lane 3 (which is clearly marked on the road surface A61 north ) and then shoot up to the Adam & Eve roundabout instead of going round again and getting in the correct lane to make that manoeuvre?

I am afraid in this day and age a good proportion of drivers will do anything to gain one place in the queue.I appreciate there are some drivers are strangers to the area and maybe unsure which lane to take and allowance should be made for that.
With regard to the Horns Bridge roundabout if I am coming from the motorway  and going to the Tesco roundabout I always take the centre lane  and round so I am in the inside lane to go on the bypass.
You have to be very wary because as you  say , frequently you get cut up as they go up to the Markham Road island.Alot will use the lane with the least number of vehicles in it regardless of where they are going.
