Don't get ripped off with your xmas turkey as i nearly did
« on: December 12, 2019, 12:39:05 AM »
I was in a well known store on tuesday and i saw a special offer stating Bernard Mathews turky crowns 1.5-3kg £5 off and normally £15 so i had a dig round the turkey crowns and found one with a label stating it was 2.8 kg, on taking it home i told my son that its weight in lbs would be around six pounds so i dug out my digital scales and found it only weighed a little over 3lbs and its actual weight in kilos was 1.6kg, i thought my scales were out so i grabbed an unopened bag of sugar and weighed that and it came in just a few grams over a kilo as you would expect because of the weight of the packaging, i took the turkey crown back to the store complete with my scales and demonstrated to member of staff who changed it for me and was very apologetic and offered a replacement and needless to say i weighed it befor accepting it, so even if you have already got your turkey don't believe the weight on the label as you could have a turkey like we got which was far from bootifull.

Speaking of turkeys this Christmas... I saw a commercial on t.v. the other day advertising the ROXI music system, basically a karaoke and musical games for your t.v. It's main boast {in the commercial} is that it contains 35 MILLION songs.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, even with every song ever produced over the last say 70 years WORLDWIDE {and some would obviously have to be re recorded into English} there would have had to have been a minimum of 42,000 NEW songs produced EVERY MONTH in those 70 years, that's almost 1500 songs PER DAY {not even Stock Aitkin and Waterman could churn them out that fast}.
Even going back further than 70 years if they are utilising pre war music hall songs or further still 18th century composers operatic arias or right back to wondering medieval minstrels all that lot wouldn't amount to any more than say a couple of million at best.
Also I've seen a couple of reviews for it and there's a complaint that quite a few, of the recent songs, are not by the original artist.

You must have inadvertantly clicked the, ( 's' with a line through it ),  at the top left side of the post reply box.
Therefore the rest of the text you typed is in 'strike through' mode. Bold Italic Underline Srikethrough

I was going to correct it, but wasn't sure if you had done it on purpose.

Thanks for that Fly I was 99% sure it was my fault but couldn't figure it out as I usually steer well clear of what's above my post, but I must have done.

I tried to correct it earlier by re posting it under "Quote" it was o.k. till I pressed post, anyway thanks again.

It's only these last couple or three years that we started buying turkey crowns, all we used to do was buy a turkey breast joint from Morrisons {Staveley} for about 12 quid and even with about 6 for Xmas dinner, plus a pork joint, and just us two for Boxing day dinner it was more than enough {and no waste} but they don't seem to do it now and what few they do do are overpriced.

It seems that, if you are getting a turkey, you're better off buying ready frozen as they are very much cheaper than so called fresh and there's a possibility your "fresh" turkey has been frozen at some stage because of the sheer demand for them at Xmas they start slaughtering them in bulk as early as the beginning of November and stored in sub zero temp storerooms. This means if you buy "fresh" early{ish} and freeze it for Xmas you run the risk of all sorts of problems as the meat would have been frozen twice.

I have always taken the word FRESH with a pinch of salt whenever I shop, just when was a particular item considered fresh. An example is eggs, virtually every egg box you pick up in a supermarket says fresh on the box, yes they were probably fresh when the trunker picked them up from the chicken farm but from then till them hitting the shelves maybe a week to ten days has passed making the word fresh void.

I used to buy a frozen whole Turkey but these days it's too big so the frozen crown is plenty.
You are right about the word 'fresh' how fresh is their 'fresh' Go by the use by date and hopefully you will be ok.
