One of my hobbies is keeping a photographic record of our local pubs. If you hear about one thats about to shut its doors forever please post its name and address so I can photo the pub and the inside ( inside photos are like golddust) so there is a photographic record. Thanks.
-
Do you go back and re-photograph if major refurbs are done?
-
Somerset House Calow is closing soon sadly to become a Tesco Express

Very much depends on weather the inside is of historic importance the one I regrett not doing was the old Portland Hotel mainly the beautiful staircase that was ripped out and went down south along with the panneling. I do photograph pubs that are still trading but if I hear like for example the Goldminers is closing (which sadly has happened) at Newbold I will try to make sure the inside is photoed while the chance is there getting access to a closed one is a game of chance.

Thank you been up to Somerset House photographic record made.

Here you go ironsky2, as requested ;)

Thank you Fly (y) Goldminers pub opened 1857 rebuilt in 1960 closed on 27 th September 2014

There's a rumour doing the rounds that the co-op are buying the Spital though it's unclear as yet whether it's as well as or instead of the one in Hasland. Could be a save our shop campaign for the local councillors if anyone knows who they are?? :-)
-
Heard rumors of the Blacksmith Arms at Calow closing not heard anything about the Spital pub I know its been struggling a bit over the last few years. It seems the Co-Op are doing a Tesco ! Perhaps Slacker might have some info on this ?
-
The Blacksmiths Arms has been closed. Bailiffs involved apparently.
Can't say much more because thats all I know basically other than heresay.
Another one bites the dust!
-
Sounds like the owners of the Blacksmiths Arms have gone bankrupt. Even if I can't get any inside photos still worth photoing the outside I suspected it will end as flats or flattened.
-
Does anyone on here know when the 'Duckmanton Lodge ' (Saddlers Bar) at Calow closed I think it was a social club of some sort. Been to photo it today looks like its been derelict for sometime and has a football playing field at the back?
-
It was the Civil Service social club, I think it was part of the deal that brought the staff of the old AGD here in the late 60's but it was available to any civil servants to be members. At its height the main building was a bar/restaurant and there were facilities for snooker and table tennis in there. The smaller Saddlers bar was a function room for parties etc that could be hired by non members. Outside they had football cricket and bowls.
As for its closure I'd hazard a guess at least of 10 years
-
Thanks JR given the state of the building I would agree ten years sounds right. Been Googleing Duckmanton Lodge it was sold in 2011 for nearly £400.000 there were plans to build three houses in the grounds and a swimming pool no less all seemed set to go but never happened. The building (main part) is quite old perhaps even Georgian in date what I could see inside was stripped out and the ceilings have fallen in a very dangerous place.
-
Sadly the Crispin pub on Ashgate road will be closing, Tesco won their bid...

Along with the Somerset House in Calow. Not until the Serious Fraud Squad investigations against Tesco's alleged falsified profit figures are concluded I bet. Tesco pub conversions may be on hold until further notice, I know the Somerset is still open (they lost too), but the pub is open until further notice, so Tesco currently don't know if they can afford to convert all the pubs they have "acquired" for the time being. Lets say they can afford it now, but their share prices have taken a massive dive, profits are down, & big investors are taking their money out. That's a massive hole to dig yourself out of.

It was a lovely place to go - living in Calow we had a few parties at saddlers bar. In the 80's my mates & I frequented the White Hart, & sometimes nipped next door to Civil Service Club for a game of Pool. It's a fine building - I remember it having it's roof tiles replaced, and then all of a sudden it closed. Like JR says could be nearly 10 yrs by now. There's quite a lot of land attached to it too - seems strange it's not been developed in any way by the current owner, unless there are objections underway etc.

When I was a kid, there was a Co-op in Calow. The shop is still there (not a co-op) but with Indian ownership - nice people too. I can't see the main one in Hasland closing if they take on the Spital Hotel - its in the heart of the village. Also (on my travels) noticed in Tibshelf a pub has been demolished & that's going to be a Co-op. The Co-op, I guess, are taking on Tesco in the small towns & villages, because, out of the whole Co-operative business, the small food hall/mini supermarket is it's most profitable part.

Not been to Tibshelf for quite a few years but I photoed all the pubs. I'm guessing the demolished pub is the 'Slap and Tickle been closed for years and in a right state.
-
Driven past the 'Bottom Pub' Danesmoor today, very sad to see the gutted shell of what was once one of our weekend pub crawls. Wracked by fire which I believe was started deliberately.
Not sure what will happen to it

Correct!

Thought it would the Slap and Tickle pub aside of it a fair piece of land.

When the pub was for sale I went with a mate who wanted to have a look round. Took a few pics but was quite dark in there the upstairs had been in the progress of been turned into bedsits. The new owner wanted to reopen it as a pub again any hope of that ended with the fire. No idea what will happen now as the fire damage was very bad personally can only see it been demolished in the end.
-
It was always our first call on Saturday and Sunday evenings. We walked across the Welfare in all weathers for that first drink. Had many happy times there.
-
I've seen it too - I think it's too far damaged to be restored.
Spital Hotel is now closed. Going to be a Co-op!
-
I'm wondering if the Royal Oak on Derby Road Tupton has closed or just not opening in the afternoons. Went passed today and it looked 'shut up' no cars in car park?
-
Don't understand about the Spital pub went to have a look last week it had a banner saying it had a new landlord and was open . Is it boarded up ?
-
I can confirm the Spital pub is not going to be a Co Op. I have spoken to the new manager today the pub will reopen tonight or tomorrow. :)
-
(y) Nice one ironsky :)
-
Ironsky: did they tell you about the fun and games on Saturday night?
-
Ironsky: did they tell you about the fun and games on Saturday night?
Sadly no but do tell. I know one of the past landlords did a runner even taking the pub furniture with them :))
-
As I understand it the people running the pub obviously took exception to how they had been treated. So they decided halfway through Saturday night to walk out. It didn't take the clientele long to realise that nothing was preventing them from helping themselves at first to free drinks and then to whatever stock was on hand. Not sure how things developed from there but 4 police cars were eventually required to sort it out!!
-
I wish someone had let me know... ;)
-
O' no missed the party! :'( Not the first time this as happed at a pub can't blame them for walking out pub co's treat there tenants poorly though forever rising rents.
-
Light's on and looked open when I drove past today. Bout 2,00pm ;)

Does anyone know if the Wellington at New Whittington has closed or under threat of closure, as the Moonrakers' pub at Newbold been sold for redevelopment?
-
Wellington appears to be fine. Moonrakers no comment.
I've noticed more and more pubs not opening in the dinnertime/afternoon slot. Derby Tup for one !
-
I have mentioned the Royal Oak Tupton it seems it isn't open week days lunch times but was open lunch time over the weekend

wellington & Goldminers earmarked for future Co-op conversions as well as Spital Hotel. I kid you not.

Goldminers closed in September this year. Like Iv said before have spoken to the new manager at Spital pub Marston's is not selling the pub ( not yet anyway) Wellington pub at New Whittington and Moonrakers I will try to find out what's happening to them. All that I ask is please don't put a pub is closing on here based on hear say or rumor its hard for the people in the trade as it is without Internet rumours about there pub closing. (y) Thanks.
-
I may be making this up as I go along but didnt the Goldminers have lots of licencing issues with underage drinkers?
-

No idea if Goldminers had issues with underage drinkers. The only way to find that out would be though the Licensing Committee run by the council or press reports if the story was published.
-
Now there's an idea Ironsky!
Chesterfield Post
April 2014
A pub in Chesterfield is to close for 80 hours after they were caught selling alcohol to underage volunteers during a test purchase operation.
The Goldminers at Newbold sold booze to the teenagers for a second time in a three month period.
Derbyshire police and trading standards carried out the checks on Thursday, March 20th, with the help of teenage volunteers, in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire.
Several premises were visited and a total of three failed, including The Goldminers. £80 fixed penalty notices were issued to staff members at the two other premises who sold the alcohol.
The Goldminers will be closed for 80 hours from 4pm on Thursday, April 24th, until 11.59pm on Sunday, April 27th.
Test purchasing operations are carried out on regular occasions throughout the county and further operations will take place across the area.
-
Interesting reading I suspect if the Goldminers was due for a licensing renewal it would had some problems so Marston's would know it would be easier to off load it.
-
You'd think so though I understand that the people behind Bar Centro in the town centre which was closed for underage sales and drug issues, have succesfully applied to run at least one other bar in the vicinity.
-

A mate of mine drinks @ the Wellington & he's been told unequivocally that it's going to be a Co-op. Not a rumour!!
Disbelieve me if you want to. :P
-
Bar Centro ( Buck Inn) was closed mainly for drug dealing then on top of that underage drinking a licensee has so many warnings and checks if no improvement happens the licence is revoked for that address. A alcohol licence is tagged to that address not the person ( hence why supermarkets when buying pubs don't have to applie for a new licence its already in place) . So in a way its a loophole you can still have a pub elsewhere even though you have lost an license at another address it happened at Sheffield a lot mostly nightclub owners who had problems at one venue then would open another venue in case one got closed.

I don't disbelieve you just want to make sure Iv got the facts right. Any idea when the Wellington is closing so I can get up there with my camera?

Don't know for sure - he posted the message on the 10th Nov, so could be a while yet.

Thanks Im going up New Whittington way this week will drop in the Wellington. I will keep a close eye on the Spital pub with regards to the
Moonrakers its only open at night time so a bit awkward for me to do but have already got an outside photo of it.
-
Been to the Wellington pub today the landlord told me it's possible that the Co-Op might turn it into one of there stores but if it did happen it wouldn't be till July next year. Also dropped into the Travellers pub on Whittington Moor it's up for let no one in while I was there the landlord kindly give me permission to photo the inside. While at New Whittington noticed that the Angel is up for let look closed down anyone know more? With regards to the Moonrakers pub at Newbold will have to leave that one can't get there at night so an idea for someone to photo it.
-
I noticed this morning the Crooked Spire pub on Church Way is now boarded up. I don't know what the plans are, but it doesn't look like it will be reopening any time soon if they've taken the effort to cover all windows and doors
-
My Mum told me today was closed on the 16th another victim of the tidal wave of pub closures.
-
It really begs the question "Where will it all end?"
I suppose we'll all be sat at home drinking cheap supermarket booze... :(

Shame about that as you say it's a lot of trouble to board it up if it's short term.
-
Colleague of mine used to DJ there I will ask him if he knows anything

Welcome to chesterfieldonline Templeton ;)
I thought the Spire was to be run by the landlords of the Summerset from Calow ?
-
I'm starting to think that Marston's Brewery are pulling the plug on Chesterfield as just lately its there pubs that are closing: Goldminers, Crooked Spire closed, under threat of closure Wellington at New Whittington, rumours about Spital Hotel noticed that the Spread Eagle has not been open lately has a note on the door will pop down to have a look. I was in town Monday and noticed that the Crooked Spire pub was closed the windows were not boarded up in fact there were notices on them saying closed for maintenance so thought nothing more. My Mum told me today that it was boarded up I always thought the landlady at the Somerset House had it not sure now unless she has decided to come out of the pub trade who knows I know they have to board up pubs for security reasons but it will look a bit of a eyesore now.

Hmm, tricky this one. I noticed The Crooked Spire downstairs windows all steel metal shuttered & workmen on the drive in entrance.Strange - I'm sure those who run the Somerset House had decided to run this when Tesco won their appeal - like a back up plan.
Both phone lines are dead - Somerset & crooked Spire.Furthermore a van has been spotted removing items from the Somerset as well today - although it was lit up & appeared to be open when I came home from work this afternoon.
Also alleged rumours of the female proprietor making statements on facebook about people "stabbing her in the back", metaphorically speaking.
I can't see this being anything to do with the folks of Calow, who use, & have fought to try & keep this pub open.
I have an informer hopefully who may be able to update me....all seems very strange :-?
-
The whole thing regarding the Somerset House to me is strange first Tesco fight tooth and nail for the pub. Then all goes quite confusion follows now something happened again who knows what. With the Crooked Spire pub I think it has been struggling for a while now wasn't that long ago it was up for let no idea if anyone took it on or weather Marston's simply just put in a new manager untill deciding its fate which has been relived today I'm guessing it will go up for sale soon we will see soon enough.
-
This seems to say it all!
http://www.findmypub.com/properties/view/17256 (http://www.findmypub.com/properties/view/17256)
-
Thanks Jake for that. This seems to be going the same way as another pub I know about. The pub closed got boarded up was advertised for let big plans for refurbishment same sort of rent. The result no takers the pub ended up as flats the pub was in a wealthy area at that.
-
Spread Eagle is trading as normal. Does anyone know what's happening to the Hobby Horse pub on Derby Road its has a fence round it?
-
There are work men's cabins outside as well. Looks like a refurb
-
Changing to a harvester in the new year.
-
Really? We like harvester. Unfortunately my step daughters ex boyfriends the manager there so ..........
-
Sounds like the Hobby Horse going to become more of a restaurant than a pub. The days of wet sales were enough to live on are well and truly over.
-
Wow this thread gone past the 1000 views didn't think anyone would be that interested in this subject. Might post a few more pub pics soon. :)
-
Now I knew the Coop had permission to turn the Goldminers into a shop, I didn't know they were extending the building to occupy as much of the rear of the area as possible. Scuse the photo quality ;)

It might be the loading area for shop that's been built as most are around the back.
-
I drove past the Woodthorpe on Coupe Lane a couple of weeks ago.
Couldn't lokk to much but there is a building going up very close to it - too close to be a dwelling place I would have thought as it appeared to be partly in the Woodthorpe car park or seating area.
Seems strange to build so close to a pub.

Two Houses OC - built up to roof level - timbers on etc.

Marstons no longer own the Crooked Spire - its now owned by Enterprise Inns (who own the Somerset House too). The Crooked Spire is to undergo a major refurbishment & might not re-open until february which is why its been boarded up. I also understood that the current managers of the Somerset had some sort of deal to move there (Crooked Spire) in fact they were already running it - after the Somerset will close - date still unsure on that one. They had moved their Carvery unit to the Crooked Spire to honour those who had booked Xmas meals at the Somerset - thinking it would be shut by then. Now Enterprise Inns are refurbishing the CS, so the Carvery has gone back to Somerset House. Methinks they have been messed about a bit!
Seems like after the refurb it is up for grabs too - not going to the Somerset House mob. However - just checked Enterprise Inns website & the Crooked Spire (on their a couple of days ago) has gone - so maybe its a done deal - who knows?
-

Flipping heck!
Do you think it's a bit close to the pub? Being higher up in your seat on the bus you will get a better look than I got.
I was wondering if they were taking the pub down initially, but looking on their website it seems a lively enough place.

Looks to me like it was a very big parking area for the pub - which was probably not used much so they sold the land for building purposes. I'm just guessing ::)
-
Sun Inn
It's been closed for a few weeks but activity inside today????
-
Activity as in trade or as in being knocked about?
-
Activity inside - not sure TBH. A few large white vans parked in car park at the back but couldn't hear any banging/noise and didn't like to peer through the window.
Guess it's wait and see, I park there when I go into town so will check it out next week.
-
Did feel cheeky but looked through the back window yesterday as the lights were on - front doors closed though.
It does look as if it's about to re-open.
-
The Sun is back in business, the old Queens Head has seen some activity over the last few weeks. Will it reopen who knows? The Devonshire on Occupation Road, Moor area is now very derelict windows mostly out fate unknown.
Has the Sun Inn new management then?
-
Which supermarket is wanting The Wellington in New Whittington - or is that a daft question?
-
Think it was the co-op.
I've also heard the Wheatsheaf is to be a Coop Home store. Non food. They already have the Goldminers.
-
Slightly off topic, but; the Walton Hotel on St Augustines Road is up for sale/to let.
-
I've heard the Bluebell North Wingfield is going up for auction.
Not sure what will happen to this old pub as no one seems to stay in it long.
-
It is, it was one of my first pubs I went in back in my younger days.
We were there about 3 weeks ago for a meal, it was lovely.
Should be going to a Christening buffet there at the end of this month - if I can go.
Hope they don't close it down :(
-
Golden Fleece in town is up for lease. Board went up today.

-
I don't think it opens until about 4.00pm on weekdays not sure about weekends.
Will check it out on their site nicheuk - but for now I have copied this from their site.
A note of reassurance.....
Dear all - It probably has not escaped your attention that the pub is going up for auction at the end of February.......we would very much like to stay on at the pub and will be attending however....WE WILL NOT BE SUDDENLY LEAVING and can 100% guarantee that we will be here for both Valentines Day and Mothers Day.
We have worked very hard to build trade and continuity of quality and service and will continue to offer the tastiest food and fantastic service. If you have made a booking in either February or March - please don't worry as we will be here to serve you. We'll keep you updated when we know anything more! Hope to see you all very soon. Here's our Mother's Day menu - come and see us and treat your Mum!!
-
Old Cruser does the Blue Bell open in the day if so me and the camera will be heading there? We are only in February but so far the Chesterfield Hotel has closed, Walton for sale, the Cricketers pub on Whittington Moor is also up for let, now the Golden Fleece they are really dropping like files.
My informer tells me =
Open Monday to Thursday from 4.....Friday Saturday Sunday from 12
-
Take your ghost buster camera with you then ;)
-
Did you go to the Blue Bell nicheuk?
-
Oh dear doesn't sound good.
Someone is taking over the 'Brit' on Ward Street New Tupton.
A lot of work being done by all accounts on it, inside and out.
-
I have it on good authority that Enterprise have a landlord and are taking much less of an interest in the CS
-
Sounds good to me - a pub for the ladies!
-
I'd say their website needs updating if my source has it right
-
Any idea who bought the Bluebell nicheuk
-
No idea who's brought the Blue Bell be interesting to see if its kept as a pub.
Here you are an update from the facebook page
We would like to inform everyone that we will be leaving the Bell on 17th March to make way for its new owners Rocco and Beverly.
We have loved our time in the pub and have really appreciated the support you have given to us - we're not going far - and can still be found at the New Inn in Tupton or our new venture - the Britannia in Tupton so please pop in and see us! Mothers Day will be our last big event and so we hope as many of you as possible will be able to join us to celebrate!
We wish Beverly and Rocco all the best for the future and hope to see you soon
Sarah, Carl and the team @ The Blue Bell
-
I believe the people currently in the B.B also have something to do with the New Inn in Tupton and from the post it sounds as if they are the ones going into the Brit. in the village, which is being re-vamped inside and out. I don't know if it's as managers though.
I'll keep my nose to the ground re- the B.B
-
I've been told a couple from Ashover Road ( Old Tupton ) have taken it and it's staying a pub
-
The Trumpeter will close for a mere couple of weeks before the one being built adjacent is ready to open
-
Because it's being replaced by a smaller pub / cafe and several shops possibly including launderette & hairdressers' and the scheme is well backed by the locals unlike several proposals elssewhere to convert pub to convenience store
-
I've heard the Wheatsheaf in Newbold is also going to be a Co-op built by a different division of the Co-op that's opening the former Goldminers! How insane is that - two shops within a half mile of each other competing against each other. Utter madness if its true.
Also, the Double Top in Inkersall is to be redeveloped by Wetherspoons & a Co-op as well. Allegedly.
-
Brewery have had a spat with the current Management at Somerset House in Calow, told them to go with immediate effect, so its shut again.
P.S. don't tell the Co-op!!
-
The Somerset House curse strikes again
p.s,
Theres nothing wrong with the co-op,maybe a little overpriced but its own product range is very good quality.
The staff at the Chesterfield branch are also really helpful and pleasant
-
By passed the question here , why build a pub when there's one only down the road that's for sale andready to go ?
he's a politician, avoiding answering the question and giving the political line instead is what he's paid to do
-
Guess Morrisons won't be wanting it pinfold ;D

-
I've heard about Morrisons on the news - what was it 52% loss pre tax - that's an awful lot of loss!!
Little surprise though is it as many people who can afford to shop are using Lidl/Aldi etc and the rest food banks!!!
