New to town and need to make new friends. Help!?

Hi, I've just moved to town from South Manchester and I literally know nobody.  I've been out in town a few times and have joined Nuffield Gym but I want to get out and about and make new friends.  I'm 42 but feel much younger, enjoy getting out, cinema, eating out.  I'm straight.  I'm looking really to find an easy way to get a circle of friends as it's not much fun being in a twon without a social circle etc.  Any ideas?

Difficult one, see what's going on in your area, go to the local pub, it will take time.

Afraid I've never been in a position of moving from one town to another. So can't really offer any advice  :-(
