Puzzles, Challenges and Riddles - part 1
« on: September 13, 2012, 09:18:11 PM »
Thought id give this a try and see if it works.  Ill post 5 puzzles/riddles/challenges (I have the answers).  How many can you get right.  If it goes well, I might try and keep a tally of people who post correctly and see whos brainiest out of all who play.  Heres the first 5.  Good luck!

1:  Mr and Mrs Maxwells son is born on Monday 29th Feb 1892.  How old will he be the next time his birthday falls on a Monday?

2:  A sailor notices that he has travelled 15951 km since leaving London on his round the world trip.  This is a palindrome (reads same forwards as backwards).  What is the next palindrome distance he reaches?

3:  When the day after tomorrow is yesterday, today will be as far from Tuesday as that day was which was today when the day before yesterday was tomorrow.  What day is it?

4: Whats the next number in this sequence? 1, 3, 4, 7, 11, 18, ??

5:  Adam has made a giant cube from wooden boards each measuring 2m x 2m.  From where he is standing, he can see all 6 sides of the cube.  Where is he standing?

1. Assuming he's not dead he will be 121.
2. I'm guessing that 15951 is the distance of a round the world trip from London so if he sets off again the answer is 11
3. Tuesday?
4. 29
5. Inside

3 is scrambling my brain

it's easy if you think about it.
the day after tomorrow is yesterday is 3 days
today when the day before yesterday was tomorrow is 3 days
if you are 3 days in one direction and 3 in the other then its the day mentioned.

Jon,  not sure you how you arrived at 1. Don't know if the hey is in "will" or "would" but I thought the calendar repeated every 28 years or was there something about 1900 not being a leap year? Can't be 121 though because 2013 is not a leap year

I could be wrong but I think you are looking at it too deeply. I think the question is framed to start you dividing the number of years by 4 and saying he will be somewhere in his mid 20's. But I stand to be corrected.

No.1 He will be 7.
People born on 29/2 don't just have birthdays on a leap year.
His first birthday will be on Tues, 1/3 1893 ie 365 days later
His second birthday will be on Wed 1/3/94 and so on.
If you keep counting in blocks of 365 for 7 years, it brings you back to Monday, 1/3/1899, the date of his seventh birthday.

No.2 I think is a trick question as well so depends on how you interpret the question.
Based on Jrs assumption that he has now back in London, then he has completed his "round the world trip" so he covers no more distance, his trip is over. So the answer is 0.
