Need photos of Prospect Sreet Stonegravels
« on: October 27, 2012, 03:10:21 PM »
My mate Malc keeps going on about his childhood in Prospect Street / Terrace where the bus depot is today. I understand there were 2 streets. Does anyone have any photos they would share online? I'll print them off for him. He's 63 and reliving his childhood I think  :'(

Hi from me too. I'm sure someone will be along soon with a photo  :)
JR, you're needed  ;)

Just had a look on Old-Maps.co.uk
The houses were still standing up untill about 1955.
By 1964/67 most had gone. The bus depot was in place.
But Albert St and Brunswick St were still there.
By 73/78 even Albert St had gone.

Never knew there had been an Albert St. Bit of an eye opener for me  ;)

The history group have a pic of a group of people planning a farewell party just before the demolition of the street in 1959. You can't see much of the street though. I have a nice article somewhere about the celebrations, fireworks etc. for the farewell party. I'll look it out and post some details.  If your friend would be happy to share some of his Prospect Street memories with the group that would be great. :)

Sorry can't help. We lived on Brunswick Street, moved out when the demolished it to build the flats (Mycul could tell you exactly when but it was either very late 60's or early 70's)
We have very few photographs from that era and certainly none of Prospect Street.
I'm with Pete, Poppy is the best bet.

Here's a snippet of the area abt 1950
It appears Prospect St was only accessible (by road) from Sheffield Rd,
and Albert St was a dead end, to the right.
Anybody know the orange streets name. I can't make it out on the fiche  ;)

The one you can't make out is Cross Brunswick Street. :)

Laughter and gaiety will echo along old, sloping Prospect Street at Stonegravels tomorrow, there will be a party for the kiddies and a bonfire and fireworks. And the theme of the festivities will be splashed in large icing letters across the party cake "Farewell Prospect Street".
The beginning of the end came to Prospect Street on Wednesday in the shape of two letters- telling two of the tenants that today they can collect the keys to their new homes. Prospect Street which is without hot water, bathrooms or gardens is doomed. The houses, all about 150 years old have been condemned and are due for demolition.
One tenant said "There is no street in Chesterfield where there is such good companionship and neighbourliness, where everyone is a friend."
extract from Derbyshire Times September 1959

I remember Cross Brunswick Street, just a short road with a yard of houses - it led down to the stream by Albert Street, if I remember correctly.

Mycul will remember so much more as he lived on Brunswick Street in the 50s and 60s.
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Just had a look at the photo and it mentions a Mrs L Holmes - mine and Mycul's grandmother's name was Holmes, another resident of Brunswick Street.

Probably a relative of ours.

In fact, I bet our Mick is on that photo...

Just kidin' Mick. :)
