could be interesting, they do indeed need to update it a little.
Use the centre on a regular basis for pool and gym so yea hope it goes ahead

In the current economic climate, would it not be prudent to renovate the existing centre? I, for one, would not be happy if they proceed and the council tax goes up.

Or why not just wait awhile until things are more settled?
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

The staff will tell you that there is nothing wrong with the temperature of the water. The problem is that because of all the glass in there and the lack of a decent cooling system  the air temperature is too high making the water appear to be much cooler than it actually is.

The staff can tell me whatever they like --- but I know the water is too cold for me  >;

I took a young person there last year and we migrated to the childrens pool for a warm up - but that wasn't too warm either, took me the rest of the day to warm up.

A business is pretty much allowed to do anything it likes as long as it stays within the law.
A council is only allowed to do what it has been granted the power to do.
Anything else is deemed to be 'Ultra Vires' or outside its powers.
I stand to be corrected but I'm pretty sure that any attempt by a council to do what you suggest would quickly be declared outside of their powers.
I'd also I'm sure be on pretty safe ground when I say that money such as this £8.5m for the sports centre is from some fund or other probably from Europe that is ring fenced to be used on capital projects such as a new sports centre and can't be used for revenue expenditure like maintaining car parks, emptying bins or as you suggest paying business rates.

As I said the £8.5m is probably ring fenced and only available for this type of capital project.

And just because they have £8.5m to spend why do you assume that they are going to waste it?

Not sure that a new building is a good idea.
Sheffield can't afford to run the Don Valley Stadium. It's closing.

Why they want to replace it beats me - it doesn't seem that long since they had the roof done was it with solar panels?

I've read the orginal article, but it isn't clear; I suppose this will be built on top of the current neglected track & field facilities?

Just askin, Barry, how do Bolsover's facilities compare? I believe they have ones at Creswell and Shirebrook but never been in. Recommendations are 2 per 28000 (I think) residents.

TBH Andy, I haven't got a clue. Never been near a Gym in my life.
Bolsover itself hasn't got a leisure centre or swimming baths, I know that.
