Speeding
« on: August 07, 2014, 09:45:25 PM »
I have been reading in the DT about speeding fines in the roadworks on the M1.It does not surprise me.I frequently use the motorway from J29 to J27 and the number of vehicles doing well over the 50mph speed limit amazes me.When you think it is not only the fine but three points on your licence plus an increase in your insurance premium although I suspect there are thousands who do not tell them.
While the roadworks are on I tend to drive in lane 2 because the lorries are so close to one another it is nigh impossible to get in Lane 1,and the number of vehicles who flash and pip you when you are keeping to the speed limits just pees me off.

When I went from 29 to 28 yesterday everyone seemed to be sticking to the limit, maybe word has been spread

I will stick to the speed limits if possible.
Like you Umpire I get peed off if a driver is trying to 'push' me to break that limit.
Equally I get peed off when I am at the back of a slow driver unable to pass where the limit is 50/60 and the driver is toddling along at 30/40.
The limits set on the motorway are set at a lower speed for a reason and people deserve to be fined

That's exactly what happened to me the other week going to Scarborough (just past Howden), a long queue of vehicles (cars & lorries) with a small red car at the front holding things up barely doing 40mph.

Not enough room to get past comfortably, but why if he/she didn't want to go any faster to ease traffic flow, didn't they just pull in and let people pass?

What many drivers don't realise is that their vehicle's speedo is probably giving a false reading and can be showing quite a bit faster than the true speed - i.e. when the speedo shows 50mph, you might only be going at 45-46mph. Someone with a satnav (which gives a more accurate reading) may therefore appear to be exceeding the speed limit but is more likely to be right on it.

As for drivers who drive slower than the speed limit - have you noticed that they ofter keep to 40-42 on the open road and through towns... Unless there is a good reason not to, drivers should always drive at the speed limit.
