There were a lot of people on facebook wanting someone to blame, they suddenly become experts on the subject. As far as I can see it changed rapidly from rain to snow therefore the usual practice of completing a 3 hour route in time for zero temperatures wouldn't work as there's no point salting in rain. Not back at work until 5th Jan but I understand contractor ploughs are working today.
About 7 gritters normally operate from Chesterfield on mostly main roads in CBC, NEDDC & BDC areas. Reduced workforce from what there one was so consequently fewer drivers though with the amount of snow that came in a couple of hours I don'rt think a lot could be done as the roads must have been gridlocked before routes were even completed.
