Move to Clay Cross???? Opinions needed please xxx
« on: May 07, 2016, 03:55:01 PM »
Hello everyone. I am new to this forum. I am considering moving to the clay cross area with my nine year old daughter. Could anyone give me any information/advice. What are the schools like, people, housing estates (I would need a housing association/council house). What things are there to do in the area etc. I really just fancy a change and a fresh start and would love to have an opinion from others. Thank you in advance xx

Welcome to the forum  :)

Clay Cross once a bustling small town is expanding as you may be aware.
Market Street once the hub of busy shoppers is pretty quiet these days and businesses are moving across to the Tesco area and beyond.

Depends where exactly you are looking i suppose, as Dansemoor and Holmgate  are close by.

It's like many areas - there will be decent streets and those maybe to avoid.

Things to do - if you enjoy walking there is the large fishing pond heading down towards Holmgate - it's just past the Library.
There is a swimming baths which also have other activities such as a gym. During school holidays they used to run activity sessions here - but there is a payable fee.

Also the Miners welfare as I know it ( not sure what they call it now) This is on the same plot as the swimming baths and there used to be a football pitch and tennis courts, again not sure what is on there these days.

I 'think' they moved the junior school from Clay Cross and it's more Danesmoor now, again on the same plot of land as the Welfare and swimming Baths. I can't comment on what it's like though - sorry.

Quite a few pubs around as well.

They also have a Community Centre which is near the Social services building just off Market Street. I think they have Bingo and Dances there sometimes. They hire it out as well.

In the same area is a building which used to be part of the school - it has a clock on the top.
They run various adult classes here and it also has a small cafe.

If I think of anything else I will post.
There may be someone else who can add more.

Hope this helps.

As I don't actually live in the Clay Cross area I don't know of any particular areas to avoid.
It depends on the people who live there, the same as any place really.

We bought our first house on Stollard Street in Clay Cross which is just below the swimming baths, very quiet little street and good neighbours but that was 46 years ago.

I still visit Clay Cross though.

There has been some new flats built just off Market Street and last week I was chatting to someone I know who lives there. They said it was lovely, but I don't know if they are council or Housing Association.

Please let us know if you are offered a home in or around Clay Cross though as someone may well be able to advise you  :)

Quite a bustling town - there is a Tesco. I don't think as far as I know that there are any areas there you need to avoid - surrounding areas like Danesmoor, Holmegate, etc are fine. Bus services are very regular up to every 10 minutes to Chesterfield.
I think you'd like it.
For comparison, where are you moving from?

Welcome to Chesterfieldonline 'Shall I'  :)

I think Clay Cross is like any other area, there are always going to be a few bad apples spoiling a mainly nice place for others.
Here's hoping if you do move there, you're not next door to one of them  (y)

I hadn't heard of Loscoe so, I hope you don't mind but I looked it up and found it's a village - not sure how big though.

Clay Cross its self is a town and the Holmegate and Dansemoor estates are a decent size. If you are happy with this then go for it.

If you are able it may be a good idea  to have a ride around the district to see what you think.

A little further afield,  but within short bus rides there is North Wingfield, Grassmoor, Hepthorne Lane ( bus service not too frequent ) Pilsley and Tupton. All I thinkhave junior schools and Tupton has a senior school with a sixth form.

It's just your preference really.  :)

I have driven through tupton a few times. I think my best bet is to ask my housing association where they have houses and then have a drive around like you advised. I would like a quiet street, no rogues lol. My daughter likes to play out so would need there to be children living close by. And of course a nice school. I have no problem with where I live to be fair. But feel we need a change and a fresh start. New home. New friends etc. Would love to live in wingerworth but doubt there would be any houses available. Wishful thinking though. Think I may contact the association tomorrow and take it from there. Thank u all for your comments. I really appreciate it xxx

Wingerworth used to be a sought after area but I think mainly private rental or owners live their. There is one street which I 'think' is council it's near the large pons and I think there's a spar shop there as well.
Adlingtons estate is Wingerworth but mainly council or people who have bought council - I don't know of any housing Associations properties on there, but that doesn't mean there are none. It's pretty quiet on there I think but no shop so you would need to go into Tupton if you needed something quick.

Tupton is ok, obviously got a few rogues - where hasn't. There are one or two parks, and woods and fields around it. The community spirit is building up as well, with entertainment evenings in the village hall and like many villages there is a Carnival planned for the summer.

Good idea to have a drive around it will give you a much better idea.
Let us know what you decide - and good luck  :)

I had a mate who used to live at Wingerworth he disliked it , had problems with public transport the locals by a few were generally unfriendly  shops are a bit thin on the ground  . Im originally from Newbold which is a large council estate ( Dunston) its near Chesterfield plenty of buses to the town centre and quite a few schools in the area also a  Catholic one . Also Whittington Moor is within reach of Newbold the Moor has a good selection of supermarkets my parents still live at Newbold they never had any bother . At present I live at Dronfield which is a nice area my daughter loves it here and the school she goes to is good I live here now as I need to be in easy reach of Sheffield were I work. I know these areas are not Clay Cross but if you struggle to get anything suitable at Clay Cross these areas are worth looking at.

Nothing wrong with Wingerworth, very nice area. In laws live there so spend a fair amount of time up there and they travel on a regular basis into town and other areas using public transport with no issues. Also two lots of shops within Wingerworth, the ones near the pond at the far end of longedge lane plus another set of shops at Edinburgh Courts near where the doctors is. Between them there are two mini market type shops, chinese takeaway, chip shop, hairdressers, pharmacy and a couple of other things.
