« on: June 08, 2016, 02:51:10 PM »
Noticed on the old Coop building some newish looking for sale signs with the name ' Rapleys' on them. Have the plans been dropped for the building also noted some work been carried out on the 'Queens Head' pub ?

Co-op no longer own the building. Work is taking place inside the building with a view to be completed in 2017 ish, so the development is still going ahead.
Also the Co-op have bid to be the supermarket as part of the Northern Gateway plan apparently.

If Coop Supermarket does move to the Northern Gateway development what would they do with the old store. Personally I would demolish it as not that great a building never liked the long glass windows . The bank building not bad and the lovely Elder Chapel hopefully protected ?

Just Googled ' Northern Gateway Development' not really convinced about this idea. Form what Iv seen of the surrounding area it would be more logical to get the empty units filled  first. Iv said this before the ' Victoria' centre needs sorting out theirs graffiti down some pillars near that pub , a glass door has been smashed recently next to the gennel the Tudor part needs sorting out along with the broken windows. Iv got versions of a revamped Coop and this 'Gateway' development ( if ever built that is) and then the Victoria Centre looking derelict a wonderfully mixed look. I really do think the council should get other sites around the town sorted out first before getting carried away with this project. Another thing why build more retail units when other shopping areas like Vicar Lane are slowly losing shops don't understand the logic here with this development?

As I said - "Watch this space". It could well be a long wait though. Forget the Co-op for now.
WCT you have hit the nail on the head. The Victoria centre from the outside looks dreadful.Don't ask me about the inside because, frankly, it doesn't tempt me to go in. I did go in many years ago when Mum was still alive and we were on a tight budget and it looked shoddy then & I guess it might be no better now.I wonder how old is some of the electrical wiring is in the buildings for example & - if the outside doesn't look good then probably the inside is the same - thats my perception so what would a tourist to Town think if they ventured in? I doubt they'd do it twice!
The Graffiti can be shifted - that's just some pretentious "Banksy" although I could not draw it so well!
We have these plans to develop & further promote Chesterfield as a tourist attraction (I think it already is to an extent),yet the Victoria Centre & Knifesmithgate as a whole is so neglected.
I love the mock Tudor theme - but Knifesmithgate lets it down dramatically.
Rant over - for now :(

Iv been in the Victoria Centre its very run down still got some old features . Theirs a bakery and a cafe on the ground floor and a cafe upstairs none of which appealed to me its a shame the owners either don't have the money to maintain it or simply only interested in the rent money.  Theirs one empty unit on the outside ( old nightclub) Iv seen pigeons walking around the carpet muck everywhere so pigeons must have a find a way in not good.

Trouble is town centres are declining because of the likes of Meadowhall with their free parking and everything under one roof, or the large Tesco in town which has other outlets moving out of town centre like Burton's.
I can see lots of the dead areas of town becoming housing rather than retail outlets.

Vicky centre is now very spacious inside to what it used to be. I've tried the cafe upstairs and it's not bad at all for a quick lunch and the price. It also has one of the best accessible toilets in town  ;)

It can be I believe a tad difficult for the council to find out who actually 'owns' some of these buildings in our town.

However they are aware of the fact that it needs doing up.

Once located they then have to be 'persuaded' to spend money on the building.

Once contacted if I remember correctly if the owners decline to 'do it up' the council is then responsible.

It all comes down to ???????????????????????'s.
